Design: Pearl Artist: Janet Fishwick About the artist Artist Janet Fishwick enjoys her involvement with public art projects since it gives her the opportunity to explore her creativity away from her employment as a veterinary professional. Janet's designs are strongly influenced by brightly coloured abstract imagery. She has previously designed and painted various public artworks, including penguins for Liverpool, rhinos for Chester and Northampton, sheep for Skipton and Olympic Mascots for London 2012. About the design Pearl is inspired by the London tradition of Pearly Kings and Queens who wear mother of pearl buttons sewn onto their suits and dresses to raise money for charity. Henry Croft was the original Pearly King and he was raised in a Victorian workhouse orphanage in London. At the age of thirteen, he left and became a road sweeper and, as he swept the market streets, he started to collect all the pearl buttons which he found that had fallen off people's clothes. Once he had enough, he started to sew them onto his cap and then continued until his entire suit was filled. He used it as a way to raise money for the children back at the orphanage. He was joined by the Costermongers (market traders) and many of the Costers became Pearly families, there being one family for each Borough of London, one for the City of London and one for the City of Westminster. Look out for the symbols: Horseshoe - luck. Dove - peace Heart - charity Anchor - hope Wheel - circle of life Flower pot - Costermonger (apple seller). Location: College Road Dimensions: Length- 2.4m Width 0.5m Height- 0.95m
