ANNIE FRENCH (Scottish, 1872-1965); pencil and pen on paper, female carrying a flower pot, signed upper right, 19 x 15cm, unframed, and a further work by E. V. French (possibly Eric French), pencil and pen on paper, fairy tale scene with a female in a wood walking towards a castle, signed lower right, 22 x 28cm, unframed (2). (D) Provenance: from a private collection, regarding the first work: One of the 'Glasgow Girls', Annie French studied at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1886-1902 under Francis Newberry. She excelled as an illustrator and developed an exquisite linear technique which drew heavily on the influences of the Art Nouveau and the Pre-Raphaelites, which can be seen through her delicate draughtsmanship and treatment of subject matter such as fairy tales and poems. Her style continues throughout her life and she returned to GSA in 1908 to teach ceramic decoration until 1912. Regarding the second work: The subject matter, composition, pen work and the way in which the signature is presented clearly show that the artist was intimately aware of Annie French's work, and suggests that it may have been executed under her tutelage. Towards the end of her life, Annie moved to Jersey to be closer to her sister and nephew, Eric. In a letter from Eric French to Una Rota (MS Gn 1771/A, file 6), he describes his admiration for his Aunt's work and how he tries to replicate it.Additional InformationWith foxing and yellowing, laid on a second piece of paper which is torn and stained. The second work slightly crumpled, particularly upper right. This lot qualifies for Artist Resale Rights. For further information, please visit http://www.dacs.org.uk
