A C1830 Irish Silver Coffee Pot, J Fray, Dublin. A Silver Coffee pot of gourd form. The hinge lid with knob in the form of a gourd resting on leaves etched with fine chasing. The handle and spout with acanthus and flower heads finely chased. The lobed body divided by broad leave and trailing flower garlands. The Coffee pot standing on a scrolled rim base with anthemion decorated feet. Weight 36 oz H: 23.5cm W: 26cm D: 17cm
A SILVER PLATED FOUR PIECE TEA AND COFFEE SERVICE, comprising teapot, coffee pot, cream jug and sugar bowl, each piece of panelled baluster form with reeded 'c' scroll handles, the entire chased and embossed with flower heads and scrolling decoration, and raised on stepped circular foot, the pots each with naturalistic foliate finial, the teapot bearing inscription. Coffee pot 24cm high, teapot 25cm wide over handle and spout; together with a silver plated tray, of shaped oval form with large reeded and leaf wrapped twin carrying handles, the raised cast scrolling rocaille rim to an engraved central reserve decorated with a continuous band of scrolls, flower heads and feathers. 67cm wide. He spent much of his career in education, and in the 1970s he was the only Professor of Conceptual Arts in the world, teaching in Sydney, Australia. He was subsequently made Director of the National College of Art & Design, Dublin in 1980 to 2002, with a four-year hiatus to inaugurate and direct the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in Australia. He represented Ireland at the 1962 UNESCO Convention of young painters in Paris, and won the Carroll Prize for painting at the Living Art exhibition in Dublin in 1965 and 1969. Sheridan was director of the Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide, Australia from 1975 to 1980 and won the Emeritus Medal for cultural contribution from the Australia Council for the Arts in 1994. In 2001, the RHA held a show of his work and in conjunction with Four Courts Press published a book 'On Reflection'.
