Riddle poem.- Moxon (Joseph, publisher and hydrographer to Charles II, 1627-1691) Wit and folly in a-maze: or come try your wits here, Ile lay a pot, in half an hour you read it or not, broadside with woodcut and letterpress, on laid paper with watermark of a bust within cartouche surmounted with flower and crescent, sheet 365 x 275 mm. (14 3/8 x 10 3/4 in), irregularly trimmed, expertly laid onto very fine tissue support, with some small nicks and splits visible when backlit, contemporary signature at top left of 'Sam: Calth:', unframed, printed by Moxon and 'to be sold at his Shop, at the upper end of Houndsditch, near Bishops-gate', [circa 1650].Literature:cf. Wing W3134 and W3134aA; Thomason, 669.f.17[78]⁂ The earliest known printing, and the only surviving copy recorded, of a traditional riddle poem. ESTC lists three other variant printings of this broadside: a) another Moxon printing, but dated 1654 with later address of Moxon when in Cornhill (see: Thomason Collection BL, 669.f.17[78]; Wing W3134), [Moxon is recorded as being at Houndsditch, as in the present copy, in another imprint dated 1648]; b) a printing for F. Coles et al. tentatively dated 1677 with minor variations [see: Harvard, Wing W3134aA]; and c) another later printing with minor variations dated circa 1710 [see: Harding Collection at the Bodleian or ESTC T207085]. The present copy has the letter signed 'N.N.' but without the intials 'B.B.' signed below the answer.

A Worcester Pu Tai pattern bell shaped coffee cup, wishbone handle, painted with a pot bellied monk seated by a rocky mound with two attendants to his left, one seated with a lotus flower, the other with a ball, the interior with iron red crowsfoot border picked out in gilt, 6.3cm high, c.1757Note. This pattern copied directly from Chinese porcelain. Pu Tai was a Buddhist Monk who lived in the Tang dynasty, his image of the jovial Monk was adopted and the popular representation of Buddha himself.

The design seems to have been created by Doctor George Davis a very important painter of the time. The base is in good condition with some blurring to the decoration.
A 19th Century Coalbrookdale type desk stand with all-over floral encrusted decoration, comprising inkwell, lidded jar, candle stand, on a two-handled tray, together with a near-matching lidded pot on quatrefoil base, un-marked CONDITION REPORTS Numerous surface stratches to the gilts, some losses and chips to the encrusted floral decoration mainly to the petals. The candlestick has a stem and flower missing towards the top, areas of surface scratches, areas of loss again to the petals. The inkwell and lidded jar all have suirface scratches, areas of crazing, areas of loss to the petals, leaves and stems of all encrusted floral decoration. The tray, again surface scratches, area of wear and loss to the gilt and areas of loss to the petals, flowers and one flowerhead is completely detached from tray. Seven Victorian green glass dump paperweights with internal decoration, including one with flowers in pot, another with mushroom design and a miniature example with single petalled flower in pot CONDITION REPORTS All glass dumps have numerous surface scratches, bruises, scuffs. The elongated one has a large chip and loss to the base. Also one of the smaller floral ones has a large chip to the base.
