Longitude.- Harrison (John).- [Short (James)] An account of the proceedings, in order to the discovery of the longitude: In a letter to the Right Honourable ⁂⁂, member of Parliament, first edition, F1 with two ink annotations, title trimmed at foot, just touching part of price, and mounted on stub, the odd spot, 20th century half morocco, stained, [Adams & Waters 2011; Norman 1941; PMM 208], small 4to, Printed by T. and J.W. Pasham, in Black-Friars, and sold by the booksellers, in London and Westminster, 1763.⁂ First edition of this very rare account of the first trial of Harrison's fourth chronometer (H4) on H.M.S. Deptford in 1761-1762. 'Harrison's chronometer not only supplied navigators with a perfect instrument for observing the true geographical position at any moment during their voyage, but also laid the foundation for the compilation of exact charts of the deep seas and the coastal waters of the world... There has possibly been no advance of comparable importance in aids to navigation until the introduction of radar' (PMM). In the last 25 years only the Streeter (2007) and Brooke-Hitching (2014) copies of the first edition have been offered at auction.
