LIVINGSTONE DAVID: (1813-1873) Scottish Missionary & Explorer of Africa. A printed portion of the proof to Livingstone's publication Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. (c.1857), bearing various holograph corrections by Livingstone. The proof states, in full (with Livingstone's holograph corrections in bold), 'The instruments I carried, though few, were the [be]st of their kind. A sextan[t], by the famed makers [Tr]oughton and Sims, of Fleet-Street; a chronometer watch, with a stop to the seconds' hand -- an admirable contrivance for enabling a person to take the exact time of observations:  it was constructed by Dent, of the Strand (61) for the Royal Geographical Society, and selected for the service by the President, Admiral Smythe, to whose judgment & kindness I am in this and other matters deeply indebted. It was pronounced by Mr. Maclear to equal most chronometers in performance. For both one of these excellent instruments I have much pleasure in recording my obligations to my good friend Colonel Steele, and at the same time to Mr. Maclear for much of my ability to use them.  Besides these, I had a thermometer by Dollond; a compass from the Cape Observatory, and a small pocket one in addition; anda good small telescope and with a stand capable of being screwed into a tree. 11th of November, 1853. - Left the town of Linyanti, accompanied by Sekeletu and his principal men, to embark on the Chobe. The chief came to the river in order to see that all was right at parting. We crossed five branches of the Chobe before reaching the main' With various tears and age wear, professionally restored and laid down. About G   Livingstone's Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa was published by John Murray in London in 1857.

William Frodsham, London a Georgian bell-top bracket clock: the eight-day duration five-pillar movement having a verge escapement and striking the hours on a bell, the backplate with engraved oriental decoration, the seven-inch break-arch brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and Arabic five-minute outer numerals, the matted centre with a date aperture and inset silvered cartouche engraved with the maker's name William Frodsham, Red Lion Sq., London, with cast c-scroll spandrels to the four corners and decorative blued-steel hands, with a strike/silent dial within the arch, the walnut bell-top case with curved canted corners, brass fishscale frets to both the sides and front, and with a brass carrying handle to the top, height 45cm (handle down).*Biography William Frodsham, born 1728, was the founder of this famous family of clockmakers and was made an honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1781 before opening his own retail premises at 12, Kingsgate Street, Red Lion Square, London. He was an important maker who may well have acted as a journeyman for Justin Vuilliamy and was taught the art of jewelling by his friend the chronometer maker Thomas Earnshaw. This caused a problem for Frodsham when he was asked by the Board of Longitude to give evidence regarding a reward for Earnshaw following the latter's claim to have improved the detached escapement. William Frodsham died in 1807 having outlived his son, the clockmaker William the younger born 1755, by 18 months and with whom he formed the partnership William Frodsham & Son in 1779.

It served on seven Naval ships over the ensuing 64 years, including perhaps the most famous of the second half of the 19th century, HMS Warrior. It was on Warrior at launch and for the following 15 years. Other vessels include HMS Cossack 1854 - 57; Waterloo 1857-61; Warrior 1861-76; Constance 1882-88; Britannia 1888-99; Barham 1915-18; Greyhound II 1918-19.It was only retired to be used for 'Instrumental Purposes' at RN Barracks Portsmouth in 1918. It left the Service in 1948 when it was sold to the chronometer makers and retailers Johannsen. HMS Warrior was the most powerful battleship of its day. Perturbed by the French Navy commissioning 'La Gloire', the first armoured wooden-hulled ship in 1858, the British Government resolved to build a deterrent. HMS Warrior was their riposte - an iron-hulled ship mounted with a heavily armoured gun citadel. The citadel was plated in wrought-iron plates 4.5 inches thick, mounted on 18 inches of solid teak, then mounted onto 1 inch thick plating. This construction meant that it was totally impenetrable by any contemporary weapon, even at point blank range. While defensively very impressive, Warrior had a commanding arsenal at her fingertips too; most of the wooden ships she might have faced carried 32-pounder guns. Warrior carried 26 x 68-pounder guns and 10 x 110-pounder guns. Thankfully, she never fired a shot in anger. Her top speed was recorded at 17.5 knots. In the 20th century she fell into dis-use, but in 1979 The Maritime Trust took her on and she is now one of the major attractions at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory.
