It was this reference, along with the 6104, that we first start seeing the word Datejust on the dial. The current example features a Swiss only dial, as opposed to Swiss Made and the Officially Certified Chronometer is displayed across two lines. More interestingly, however, is that the wording of Datejust appears in the colour red. Correct for the period this lot also features a date wheel in just red, perhaps even one of the last fully red ones before the date wheels became predominantly roulette ones for the rest of the 50s.The thin milled or reeded bezel associated with this reference would evolve into the fluted bezel iconic to the modern day Datejust. The 6105 also has the nickname of Ovettone due to its egg-shaped case. The current owner has had the piece for over 25 years and has worn it infrequently. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Since every one was numbered and listed separately, we know exactly how many were produced and that only 136 successfully passed through to attain the coveted 'KEW A' Certificate. The test is carried out over 45 days and includes temperature fluctuations and was designed by the Royal Navy for ship's chronometers. Rolex made a very special effort to obtain these results and the watches were specially made for the tests. Using a 10-1/2 ligne 700 calibre base movement, unusually in pink gilt, with a completely re-calibrated escapement and reworked nickelled balance bridge. They used a Nivorox freesprung and exceptionally fine balance with a Breguet overcoil creating the calibre known to Rolex as the 720. This project was overseen by one of the best 'regulators' of the time, Jean Matile, who obtained various records from 1925, including the Neuchatel best ever result for a wristwatch with 8.4 points and the astonishing 93.8 points at Kew also for a wristwatch movement. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
