shaped oblong, with Art Nouveau style decoration46cm wide, 50oz 10dwt, 1,571grProvenance:Fellows and Sons Limited, Birmingham, 10 December 2012, lot 6.The history of the William George Connell can be traced back to 1817 when the firm was recorded at 22 Myddleton Street, Clerkenwell. In the early years, the company would seem to have been mostly involved in the sale of watches, by 1846 for example, being recorded as chronometer and watchmaker to the Royal Navy. It was apparently his son, William George, whose mark appears on the present tray, and his grandson George Lawrence Connell who were to champion the sale of Art Nouveau style, or, as recorded in 1902 on the death of William George Connell '... one of the pioneers of modern artistic silverware.' (a quoted J. Culme, The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914, p.94). Besides silver marked with the distinctive Connell mark of WGC mark in a trefoil the company sold the work by others, including items designed or made for example by Kate Harris, William Hutton and Sons and later A. E. Jones.Fully marked near rim. The marks are generally clear. There is some minor surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a minor softening to the high points.

Instead of "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" the dials would spell out "Precision" or "Super Precision" above the 6 o'clock position. This example is a very rare variation of the Explorer dial with striking features. The dial has the original lacquered black glossy dial and gilt finished writing, but the main feature which collectors love to see is the Underline beneath the Super Precision. Case and barcelet with surface scratches, case with very minor dents to the side and bezel, bracelet links are slightly stretched, bracelet clasp with Rolex emblem slightly rubbed, bracelet would probably date circa 1970 and has been placed onto this watch when serviced. Ticking with a tipsy key, a further winding key and a case key. 19cms (7ins) wide. Footnotes:Purchased 22 March 2001 from Jeffrey Formby Antiques.John Frodsham was born in 1781, joining his father and grandfather at 'William Frodsham & Son' after completing his apprenticeship in Clerkenwell, in 1805. By 1807, his father and grandfather had both died, leaving him as sole proprietor; the firms name was changed that year to 'John Frodsham'. He gained his freedom in 1822, relocating the business and establishing himself as a maker of pocket watches and chronometers, as well as marine chronometers. In 1834, he took his eldest son, Henry John Frodsham, 25, as a business partner and changed the business's name to 'John Frodsham & Son'. Henry John Frodsham died a year before his father, in 1848, and the business was taken over by John Frodsham's youngest child, George Edward Frodsham, born in 1831. It is likely that George Edward Frodsham had already become part of the firm, after the death of his older brother, as the name remains 'John Frodsham & Son' during this period. This would remain the firm's name until 1854, at which point it was changed to 'Frodsham, Son & Co'. The firm bore this name until 1855, then became 'Frodsham & Baker' until 1863, when it was changed again to 'George E. Frodsham,' the name it kept until it disappears from trade directories in 1901. George Edward Frodsham died in 1903. His cousin, Henry Frodsham, was born in 1802 and was apprenticed to William James Frodsham, his (Henry's) father and one of the founders of the celebrated 'Parkinson & Frodsham' firm. Around 1831, it seems that Henry moved to Liverpool to run the nascent Liverpool branch of 'Parkinson & Frodsham,' which had been started 10 years previously. Three years later, Henry purchased the Liverpool branch from 'Parkinson & Frodsham' and renamed the business 'Henry Frodsham, chronometer maker, 38 Castle Street, Liverpool.' In 1856, the firm entered into partnership with a local nautical instrument maker, Robert John Keen, and the name was changed to 'Frodsham & Keen', Keen's own shop being renamed 'Keen & Frodsham.' Henry Frodsham died in 1858, the business passing to his wife, Frances Louisa. The firm continued under the name 'Frodsham & Keen' until closing its doors in 1935; Frances Louisa died in 1871, so it seems that at some point she sold her partnership to Keen. This seems to suggest that this chronometer was made before 1855, before both the London and Liverpool firms changed their names when entering into separate partnerships. Why refence is made to both branches on the dial is not known, it is unclear how much interaction various branches of the family had, though this chronometer does suggest a hitherto unknown close connection between the Gracechurch Street Frodshams and the Liverpool Frodshams. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A 19th century two day mahogany marine chronometerSigned 'Eleve de' Parkinson & Frodsham London #537The three part case with blank brass cartouche to the top lid, the centre section with brass flower button above a later ivory signature plaque, the lower section with inlaid brass escutcheon with an ivory number plaque below and folding handles to the sides. The 3.25 inch silvered Roman dial enclosed by an Arabic minute band, subsidiary power reserve from 0-48 at XII and observatory style seconds dial at VI, signed eleve de Parkinson & Frodsham London No. 537 below the gold spade hands. The spotted movement with four ringed pillars and maintaining power to the chain fusee, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring with diamond endstone and Earnshaw type escapement, cut and compensated bimetallic balance with circular timing weights, with typical bayonet-fitting sprung dust cap in a weighted, scratch-numbered gimballed bowl. Ticking with two winding keys and a case key. 15.5 x 15.5 x 16Footnotes:Purchased 16 August 2002 from Gerald Marsh Antique Clocks, Winchester. There are three people associated with Parkinson & Frodsham that are known to have used the 'eleve' signature. The first is William Edward Frodsham who was the second eldest son of William James, born in 1814. He entered into his apprenticeship with his father in 1823, but tragically drowned in 1825, at the age of 20. Despite this, two marine chronometers are known to exist by him, numbered 1 and 2, and both signed on the dial Eléve of Parkinson & Frodsham. No. 2 accompanied Charles Darwin aboard H.M.S Beagle, and was sold in these rooms in 2014.The second person to use the 'eleve' name was Thomas Cotterell. Thomas Cotterell (also spelled Cottrell) was based at 163 Oxford street as Cotterell & Co. throughout the 1820's-1830's. Cotterell is known to have signed some marine chronometers as Elevé de Parkinson & Frodsham, despite not being listed as an official apprentice. One chronometer is known to be signed as Cotterell and Co., London and Parkinson & Frodsham, meaning it is possible that Cotterell made movements for Parkinson & Frodsham, rather then having been apprenticed to the firm. Further evidence of his association with Parkinson & Frodsham is that several chronometers were entered in the Greenwich trials by T. Cotterell, yet Parkinson & Frodsham literature took credit for the favourable results received. A chronometer made by Cotterell, No. 368, was bought for 80 guineas in 1829 by the government, to be used on the HMS Rainbow 1823, a 28-gun warship. He had several correspondences between 1822-1835 with Greenwich observatory, regarding the Trials and various parties interested in buying his chronometers. Beyond this, very little is known about his life, including when he stopped trading. The third person to consider is Henry Herbert Frodsham, William Edward Frodsham's nephew. Henry Herbert Frodsham was born in 1850 to Henry Frodsham, a Liverpool watch and chronometer maker and brother of the above-mentioned William Edward Frodsham. Henry Herbert served his seven-year apprenticeship with Thomas Robert Russell, completing it in 1871. After his apprenticeship, he was made a manager of Thomas Robert Russell and sent to manage their branch locations in Chile, then Germany, and finally London, where he seems to have established his own shop at 33 Picidilly, staying there between 1881-1884. A deck watch is known by him from this date, and it is signed on the dial Henry Frodsham élève of Parkinson & Frodsham, Change Alley, London. By 1886 Henry Herbert had moved to Bedford, again establishing himself as a watchmaker. In 1897, he went in to business with his wife Catherine, who was an optician, and formed H & C Frodsham, specialising in optics, whilst still offering watch repairs. Henry Herbert Frodsham died in 1915, but H & C Frodsham continued as an opticians under his daughter, Dorothy Frodsham, until her retirement in 1961.It seems likely that this particular chronometer was made by Thomas Cotterell. Cotterell outlived William Edward Frodsham and spent longer working in London then Henry Herbert Frodsham. Cotterell also used a grammatically correct French signature, eleve de, rather then William Edward and Henry Herbert, both of whom used eleve of. Why Cotterell didn't include his name, as he had done on previous examples remains unknown. The trade sticker in the chronometer box is from Liverpool nautical instrument and chronometer maker Alexander Cairns. He is recorded as working at 12-13 Waterloo Road between 1859-1872, having previously worked at 32 Waterloo Road, just up from Waterloo Dock. There is no record of interaction between Cairns and Parkinson & Frodsham. However, the latter had two branches in Liverpool, four wards east, also just up from the docks. It is possible that this chronometer may have been sent from the London workshop to be sold in Liverpool, though this cannot be confirmed.University of Cambridge (2015) Cambridge Digital Library: Papers of John Pond. A fine early 20th century carved mahogany table clock, dated 1905Clifford Lupton, London, 1905 The inverted breakfront architectural case with glazed top and overhanging cornice supported by two Composite freestanding columns, floral scroll carving to the front and sides, the back door with brass quatrefoil sound frets on a stepped moulded base with shallow block feet. The 3.75 inch circular engraved gilt brass Roman dial signed at XII, above an elaborately engraved floral centre framed by a sight ring. Ticking and striking the hours and half hours, together with a crank key included. 19cms (7.5ins) high.Footnotes:Clifford Lupton was born in 1825 and died on 26th January 1910, his death certificate listing him as a 'retired chronometer maker'. He had associations with Barraud; seemingly working for the firm initially, possibly as a foreman, before setting up his own business at St. Michael's Chambers, 42 Cornhill (Barraud were at 41 Cornhill) between 1866-1876, before relocating to 3 Newman's Court, Cornhill in 1877. His good friend and successor W. J. Barnsdale, and later Barnsdale's son Stanley would continue to operate at these premises until 1921. That Lupton remained in touch with Barraud is obvious from a quantity of correspondences between Lupton and the various Barraud brothers, including I.O.U's from the latter, possibly for the chronometers that he continued to make for them. Amongst his discovered personal papers were a number of doctor's bills, suggesting that Lupton was not particularly healthy; this clock is testimony to that fact that, despite his chronic poor health, he was retailing clocks into at least his mid 80s. Despite his ill health, Lupton was a very successful horologist, having amassed a fortune on his death of £30,656.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The gilt brass case with handle formed of two crouching mythical beasts perched above the large escapement inspection window, the case top with floral and shield casting supported by four decorative pillars cast with shields, strapwork and fish, the solid rear door with named sliding dust covers, supported on a shield- and floral- cast base on shaped feet. Ticking, striking, repeating, and functioning alarm. Together with a travel case and winding key, the latter fitting into a formed recess in the bottom of the case. 17.5cms (7ins) high.Footnotes:Paul Garnier (né Jean-Paul) was born in 1801 in Épinal, France, moving first to Luxeuil to carry out a watchmaking apprenticeship, and then to Paris in 1820 to join Lépine's workshops, before finally establishing his own business in 1825. In the 1827 Exhibition he exhibited an astronomical clock and mantel regulators, which won him a silver medal (he would win silver medals again at both the 1834 and 1839 Exhibitions, before attaining gold in 1844). From 1830 Garnier began to make affordable, semi-massed produced carriage clocks (pendules de voyage) which can be said to have established the Parisian carriage clock industry. At around the same time he wrote to Antide Janvier asking for permission to use the title 'Elève de Janvier' as he had attended the free Horological school Janvier had established in 1802. Janvier assented to his request, and Garnier used the title on his carriage clocks until about 1835, and in his written correspondences until at least 1844. Around 1835, Garnier made use of the title 'Horloger [or Her] du Roi', which in turn is supplanted by 'Her De La Marine' after 1848. Signed 'Her du Roi', this clock, was likely made in the second quarter of the century. His combination of basic shape and cost-saving escapement meant that pendules de voyage, having previously been too expensive for the vast majority of people, were reduced in cost to the price of a standard mantel clock. As well as being affordable, these clocks were well made, exhibiting very fine diameter pivots (even by French clock standards) and usually with rack striking. Repeating was saved for the more expensive examples, as in the current case. In his early clocks, engine turned dials in a watered silk style with one-piece cases and barrel stopwork were all the norm. Between about 1830 and 1840, it was common to fit a coloured-paper covered block of wood into the base of the hollow casting. In addition to carriage clocks, Garnier presented a novel master clock and slave clock system (1847), and at least one chronometer has been assigned to him. He also pursued scientific instrument making, his obituary being published in the Society for Civil Engineers bulletin in 1869.The clock is stamped on the back of the front plate with 'Paul Garnier Her Du Roi Paris' in the upper left corner, and '1029' in the lower centre.Included with the lot is a clipping from Country Life, 1973 which illustrates and describes this clock. For further reading, see Allix, C. At the time, Frodshams were perhaps the finest clockmakers working in London. A 1911 advertisement reproduced in Mercer, T. (1981) The Frodshams The Story of a Family Chronometer Makers. Kent: The Antiquarian Horological Society, plate 48 advises that as well as Fine English Watches, they sell 'Reproductions of Louis XV and XVI clocks - he frontplate of the movement is stamped with the initials JM and the number 9005.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
