A fine Regency Gothic Revival ormolu carriage timepiece Dwerrihouse and Fletcher, London, circa 1830 The four pillar eight-day single chain fusee movement with vertical English lever escapement regulated by sprung monometallic balance mounted on the arched backplate over engraved signature Dwerrihouse & Fletcher, LONDON, the 2.5 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with engine-turned centre and delicate blued steel moon hands set within convex glazed milled bezel and engine-turned gilt mask, the ogee-top case with leaf cast carrying handle repeating lancet-shaped panel chased decoration fronted by shallow gothic arch with leafy crest and quatrefoil panel to apex over cluster columns with acanthus capitals flanking dial, the sides with bevel-glazed windows, the rear matching the front but with engine-turned gilt break-arch door, the base with shallow skirt slightly projecting at the angles and leaf cast bun feet, 18cm, (7ins) high including handle. The operational dates for the partnership between Dwerrihouse and John John Fletcher appear not to be recorded in the usual sources however John Fletcher was a chronometer maker and a maker to the Admiralty He was a finisher and a springer which meant that he was highly skilled in his work. Later Fletcher bought out Dwerrihouse of 27 Davies St, Berkeley Square hence timepieces signed Fletcher, late Dwerrihouse & Carter are also known.

Ursuline, circa 1858 The lacquered brass bowl with screw-down bezel incorporating internal angled silvered brass fillet enclosing a 2 inch circular dial aperture and with shuttered winding hole to underside, mounted via gimbals into a brass bound rosewood wood three tier box with ruffled blue velvet lining to the inside of the top tier, the exterior centred with a shield-shaped brass plaque engraved URSULINE, R.Y.S. to top over front with circular mother-of-pearl plate inscribed No. 367 above shaped brass lock escutcheon, 12.5cm (5ins) wide. The R.Y.S. (Royal Yacht Squadron) Ursuline (vessel Reg No 21686) was built in 1858 by Inman's of Lymington for Lord Londesbrough. Johannsen & Co., MAKERS TO THE ADMIRALTY, THE INDIAN GOV'T & ROYAL NAVIES, of Spain & Portugal, 149 Minories, London and WIND DOWN/UP dial to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with shuttered winding hole to underside and stamped with repeat serial number 9199 to interior mounted via gimbals into a mahogany three-tier box (top tier lacking), the front with vacant ivory name plate and the sides with recessed lacquered brass carrying handles, 18cm (7ins) wide. Danish born Asmus Johannsen is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in London from 1863-9. He is also listed in Mercer, Tony Chronometer Makers of the World as a 'great maker supplying other makers..' who worked from various addresses in London from 1859 before finally moving to 149 Minories in 1865. The external wooden case has minor surface scratches, marks and wear consistent with age and use.
