c1929, the signed white dial, 41mm diameter, with black Roman numerals, blued spade hands, subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock and chemin de fer chapter ring, hinged and signed front loading crown wind mechanical movement number 467093 with pictorially decorated ratchet wheel, crown wheel engraved 'Tempus Fugit', and winding bridge engraved 'jewelled', under a polished nickel dust cover, with pumpkin shaped winder, case, 48mm, by Dennison, numbered 467093, with Birmingham hallmarks for 9ct gold, gross weight 87.6g and presented in the original cardboard box and with the original guarantee paperwork dated 12/12/1932Footnote: The name 'Russell' has been associated with watchmaking in Lancashire since the early 19th century and Thomas Russell (1780-1830) was the founding father of this 6 generation watchmaking dynasty. Having changed premises a number of times, in 1877 the business moved to Cathedral Works, 12 Church Street, Liverpool, with extra workplaces at Piccadilly in London and Toronto in Canada. In 1880, they were listed as “watch and chronometer producers and machine made keyless lever and jewellery retailers” and moreover, “by Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and the Admiralty”. At this time, the wealth of Liverpool exceeded that of London and the company became extremely successful and well known as producers of fine quality timepieces. The company ceased trading in 1994.

c1900, the front lid with blue enamel Roman numerals and chemin de fer chapter ring, signed white dial, additionally marked '08764 AD. Fmsz', 42mm diameter, with black Roman numerals, blued double swell spade hands, subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock and chemin de fer chapter ring, signed crown wind mechanical movement with diamond end stone, top plate marked 'by appointment to the Queen 115 New Bond Street late of 84 Strand London number 08764', the raised area over the barrel engraved with a scroll pattern, hand setting button at 4 o'clock and onion shaped winder, case, 50mm diameter, by Harrison Mill Frodsham, numbered 08764 and with London hallmarks for 18ct gold, the cuvette similarly marked, gross weight 137.5gFootnote: Charles Frodsham was a distinguished English horologist, founding his business in the 1840s. From 1884, he traded as Charles Frodsham & Co, which remains in existence as the longest continuously trading firm of chronometer manufacturers in the world. At the Great Exhibition in 1851, he was awarded a first-class medal for his timekeepers. The firm won fourteen further medals and honours at the major international exhibitions over the rest of the nineteenth century. The coded letters 'AD Fmsz' can be seen on the dials and movements on many Frodsham watches. This cryptogram corresponds to '1850', the year Charles produced his new caliper watch, and was used thereafter as a sign of the highest quality. The fact that diamond was used as the endstone seems to confirm this. This is an outstanding example of British Victorian horology at its best, housed in a heavyweight, finely made case.
c1964, model 806, the signed 'reverse panda' dial, 38mm diameter, with twin jet logo, gold coloured batons and hands and gold coloured chronograph sweep, three 'small size' subsidiary dials recording running seconds and chronograph minutes and hours, outer tachymeter scale and bi-directional slide rule marked milled edged bezel, signed mechanical crown wind chronometer rated 17 jewel venus 178 movement, import code 'WOG', (for Wakmann), case, 40mm diameter, gold-plated with pushers above and below the crown, verso steel and snap on, signed and numbered 806, interior numbered 978312, to a signed black leather padded strap with white stitching and liveried steel pin buckleFootnote: One of watch-makings most important historic chronograph models, the original 806 Navitimer set the template for modern technical pilot’s watches. Billed as a wrist-sized computer when it was first developed in 1952, the rotating bezel has the ability to compute distance travelled, flight time, airspeed, and remaining fuel consumption, due to the integration of a slide rule. In 1956, Breitling introduced the Venus 178 manually-wound chronograph movement which would continue to be used until the early 1970s. Eight years later, Breitling changed the dial layout of the Navitimer, most likely adapting to changing tastes and increasing legibility in low-light conditions. The now-iconic “reverse panda” configuration with black dial and white subdials was introduced in 1963 and in 1964, the bezel edge changed from a bead edge to a milled edge. Another stylistic change was the introduction of the “twin jet” logo, with ‘Breitling Genève’ below. With the majority of cases produced in stainless steel, a small number were produced with gold-plated cases, and an even smaller number in 18ct gold. The iconic Breitling Genève Navitimer 806 still remains today near the top of virtually every vintage watch collector's wish list.
