Very slight chips to the edge of the glass, significant wear to brass finish commensurate with age and use. Crack to the numbering medallion on the case. The dial is in good condition. There is no damage to the one o'clock numeral (the additional images show reflections from the scratched glass). There are small dark coloured bits, most of which are either on the underside of the glass or in the glass. There are also some small dark coloured bits around the very edge of the dial or on the metal surround (visible with a 10s lens). There are scratches to the case, case back, clasp and bracelet. A one-day marine chronometer by John Roger Arnold no.544, circa 1821, silvered dial with subsidiary seconds, typical brass gimbal mounted in mahogany case, with replacement ivory plate to the front. With HM Government ivory registration number 8HQ5J5DBThis chronometer was originally supplied to the Admiralty in 1821. According to official records, it was used aboard the Beagle in 1837, though just missed out on Charles Darwin's trip around the world on the same ship between 1831 and 1836. It is last recorded in official use in 1887.Offered with a copy of the Arnold book by Mercer. Currently ticking. Some marking/staining to the dial. Kal. 478BWSbr, signiert, manuell, 17 Steine, Weicheisen-Farraday-Käfig, rhodiniert, seitliche Ankerhemmung, monometallische Unruh, justiert in fünf Positionen und auf Temperaturen, selbstkompensierende Breguet-Unruhspirale, Schwanenhals-Regulator. Das Uhrwerk läuft. Originales Zifferblatt, cremefarben, arabische und stählerne Indexe, Leuchtzeiger aus Stahl Leuchtfabe fehlend /unvollständig() indirekte Zentralsekunde. Plastiklünette mit Benutzungssuren und kleinen Kratzern, im rechten unteren Viertel in der Randkante gerissen. 1958 nur 1038 Stück produziert im Inneren Gehäusenummer 748422 - "Acier inoxidable- Le Coultre&co - Swiss" Band und Schliesse nicht Original. "Die Chronometre Geophysic E168 wurde 1958 während des offiziellen Internationalen Geophysikalischen Jahres geschaffen, einem internationalen wissenschaftlichen Projekt, das vom 1. Juli 1957 bis zum 31. Dezember 1958 dauerte und an dem sich 67 Nationen an der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der unwirtlichsten und unerforschten Orte unseres Planeten beteiligten. Sie markierte auch das Ende einer langen Periode während des Kalten Krieges, in der der wissenschaftliche Austausch zwischen Ost und West stark unterbrochen war. Die Geophysic war für Entdecker und Wissenschaftler bestimmt und hatte ein vom Bauhaus inspiriertes, schnörkelloses Zifferblatt, das für das Ablesen der Zeit optimiert war. Das Chronometerwerk (eine Seltenheit für die Marke zu dieser Zeit) verfügte über einen zentralen Sekundenzeiger, ein spezielles Einstellsystem für eine einfache Regulierung sowie eine Glucydur-Unruh, die durch Temperaturschwankungen nicht beeinträchtigt wird. Das Uhrwerk wurde dank eines antimagnetischen Innengehäuses aus Weicheisen zusätzlich geschützt und war somit resistent gegen 600 Gauß - perfekt für die Forscher, die auf den Polarstützpunkten, in den Labors und im Inneren der U-Boote arbeiteten. Ein stolzer Moment in der Geschichte der Marke, da sie bei der ersten (dreitägigen) Unterwasserfahrt von einem Ozean zum anderen auf dem direktesten Weg, unter dem Eisschild, das die Arktis bedeckt, eingesetzt wurde. Warum hat ihre Crew den E168 benutzt? Es handelt sich um einen ultrapräzisen Chronometer (Kal. 478BWSbr), der in einem robusten Stahlgehäuse mit einem zusätzlichen Innengehäuse untergebracht ist, um das Uhrwerk vor der Wirkung von Magnetismus zu schützen.Während einer Zeremonie am 16. Dezember 1958 wurden den U-Boot-Kommandanten William R. Anderson und J. F. Calvert von den Genfer Bürgern zwei Geophysic-Uhren überreicht, um sie an ihre Leistung der Überquerung des Nordpols in ihren U-Booten im August 1958 zu erinnern.Jaeger Le Coultre lancierte 2014 eine "Hommage an die Geophysic", doch diese originale Geophysic Reference E168 ist einer der begehrtesten Chronometer-Zeitmesser für anspruchsvolle Sammler." It has a normal open bimetallic balance wheel with a cylindrical balance-spring and thermal and running (oscillating) regulation nuts.Founded in Le Locle, Switzerland, in 1824, Grandjean Henri et Compagnie S.A. was a manufacturer specialising in pocket watches with large and small chimes and marine chronometers. Henri Grandjean was one of the founders of the Neuchâtel Observatory in 1858 and received numerous first-class medals and prizes.

Accessories: presentation case. £2,000-£3,000 --- Charles Frodsham & Co. are the longest continuously trading firm of chronometer manufacturers in the world and still holds a Royal warrant as supplier of clocks to the British Royal Family. Born on 15 April 1810, Charles Frodsham was born into a dynasty of clock, watch and chronometer makers. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to his father William. In 1844 Charles purchased the business of John Roger Arnold upon his death and moved into Arnold’s former premises at 84 Strand. To take advantage of Arnold’s reputation, Frodsham changed the name of his business to Arnold and Frodsham. Over the next 14 years Charles established himself as one of the most eminent horologists of his time so no longer used the Arnold name after 1858.
