Basford Collection paper label, no.138. See The Caughley Society, 'Caughley - Blue and White Patterns', The Caughley Society, 2012 (hereafter referred to a C, B&W', page 188-189 for a discussion of this pattern and a similar dish)

Lot 136

A Caughley coffee cup, circa 1778-88, transfer printed in blue with two opposing oval cartouches in the Fruit and Wreath pattern, alongside a secondary print of flowers, foliage and fruit, set below a floral wreath border, underglaze blue C mark, 7cm high See Geoffrey Godden, 'Caughley & Worcester Porcelains 1775-1800' (Antique Collectors' Club: Suffolk, 1981) hereafter referred to as C&WP, p.42, which shows a reproduction of the engraved copperplate design of this pattern, and where the author notes, 'The same standard design was more often applied to Worcester than Caughley porcelain ... it is applied in the main to teawares but can also occur on other objects, such as patty, or tart pans'.

Lot 137

A Caughley tea bowl, circa 1782-94, with raised, fluted rim, transfer printed in the Temple pattern, below an associated Fitzhugh border, unmarked, 6.5cm high See C&WP, p.18 where the author notes that, 'The so called 'Temple' pattern is found almost exclusively on teawares, porcelains bearing this printed subject normally bear the printed 'S' mark, sometimes with a workman's 'x' or 'o' added. A close copy of this design is found on Worcester porcelains but here it appears to be handpainted, not printed.'

Lot 138

A Caughley tea bowl, circa 1775-82, painted in blue with the Waiting Chinaman pattern, contained within a double-line circle, surrounded by a design of supplementary flowers, unmarked, 8cm diameter Footnote; Like a number of other Caughley patterns, an identical version of this design was used at the Worcester porcelain factory until 1775, the year it began at Caughley. This offers up the interesting prospect that the painter responsible left Worcester for some reason and moved on to complete work at Caughley.

Lot 139

A Caughley saucer dish, possibly a bread and butter plate, circa 1776-95, transfer printed in the Bell Toy pattern below a single blue line rim, unmarked, 22cm diameter (firing flaws and chip to rim) Ex J&S Wyatt Collection paper label. See C&WP, page 25 for a discussion on this design where the following is surmised, 'This design was one of the earliest employed on Caughley porcelain, for it is found on the mug dated 1776 in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The subject was re-used by the Coalport partners on their post-1799 hard paste porcelain. The original name of this pattern was probably 'Image', for which there are a number of references to in the Chamberlain/Caughley accounts'.

Lot 140

A Caughley teapot and cover, circa 1780-85, transfer printed in blue with the Bell Toy pattern, of plain, globular form, with double indented loop handle, the cover with plain knop, printed S mark, 16cm high See The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust's, 'A Bicentenary Exhibition of Caughley Porcelain, c.1772-1799', hereafter referred to as CBE, page 40, plate 419 for a teapot in the same pattern.

Lot 141

A Caughley wet mustard pot and cover, circa 1780-85, transfer printed in blue with the Three Flowers and Butterfly pattern, the cover with an open flower finial, an ornate moulded handle, below associated double blue line to shoulder,, printed C with serif mark, 10cm high Bears Roderick Jellicoe, London paper label.

Lot 142

J&S Wyatt Collection paper label. See CB&W, page 73 for a discussion of the pattern where it is noted that at this stage Caughley was copying the French underglaze blue painted patterns originally developed at Chantilly in around 1770. The design soon spread across Europe and was widely copied on both porcelain and earthenware. Caughley used it on shapes which were predominantly in a Continental style.

Lot 143

A Caughley coffee cup, circa 1785-90, painted in blue with the 'Island Sampan' pattern, having double indented strap handle, below an associated internal border, C with serif mark, 6.5cm high Bears Ex. J&S Wyatt paper label.

Lot 145

A Caughley sauceboat, circa 1785, printed in underglaze blue with the Bandstand pattern, of linefold moulded form with a raised strap handle, with scrolled support and projecting thumb grip, unmarked 10cm high (chipped spout) See C&WP, plate 173 for a similar example alongside two unglazed factory wasters, see also CBE catalogue no. 354 for a similar example, and Panes, Nicholas British Porcelain Sauceboats of the 18th century, Gomer Press, 2009, page 248, figure 405 for a colour illustration of a similar piece. Pane suggests that contemporary creamware may have been the influence for this design.

Lot 146

A Caughley mask spout jug, circa 1795, the cabbage leaf moulded body transfer printed in blue with the Fisherman pattern, cell and spear border to the internal upper rim, mask spout and applied scroll handle, unmarked, 19cm high Ex J&S Wyatt Collection paper label, no.16 *The entirety of Chapter 3 of C&WP is devoted to this well-known pattern. Originally called 'Pleasure Boat' in the eighteenth century, the pattern is found on a wide range of Caughley porcelain. This mask head jug in this pattern was originally known as 'Dutch Jug', and the Chamberlain accounts list four different sizes with this pattern.

Lot 148

A Caughley spittoon or saffer pot, circa 1775-78 of globular form with wide rim, printed in underglaze blue in the Three Flowers and Hips pattern, S mark, 11.5cm high See C B&W, page 119 where this pattern is noted as being 'rare', having only been previously recorded on Caughley sucriers. See also C&WP page 104, for a discussion of the purpose of these vessels and their possible use as saffron bulb holders. Godden suggests that this could be the derivation of the term 'safflower', which, when abbreviated could give the name 'saffer' as found in the Chamberlain-Turner accounts. Remnants of Roderick Jellicoe paper label to base.

Lot 149

A Caughley mug, circa 1780, cylindrical body with applied strap handle, printed in underglaze blue with the Parrot pattern and supplementary moth print, with internal and external blue printed Nankin border, blue printed C with serif, 12cm high See C&WP, page 121 for a discussion of the Parrot and Fruit pattern. See C & W P plate 93 for a butter tureen and cover in this shape decorated with the Fence pattern. Godden notes that Caughley examples have thick, short leaves compared to Worcester versions which have thin and rather flat leaves. (restored)

Lot 151

A Caughley salad bowl or junket dish, circa 1780, circular bowl moulded to the interior with three scallop shells, printed in underglaze blue with the Pine Cone pattern, within a painted toothed internal border; exterior printed with root vegetables, moths, and a snail, underglaze blue C with serif, 24cm diameter See C&WP plate 167 for a similar piece, and page 142 for a discussion of the difference between Caughley and Worcester salad bowls. The author also notes on page 104 that the Chamberlain accounts include several references to 'square sallad vessels', which were priced at 7s 6d each. A Caughley quart mug, circa 1780, transfer printed in the Pine Cone pattern below a diaper border, having plain loop handle, underglaze blue S O mark, 14.5cm high Bears ex. Wright Collection paper label, no.212. *See CB&WP, page 128, where the author notes, 'Pine Cone is obviously related to the Ripe Pomegranate and Columbine patterns, but its source is unknown. Found on contemporary Chinese wares, the similarity of the 'pine cones' to mulberries, so important to the Chinese trade, lends weight to a Chinese origin'.

Lot 155

A Caughley tart or patty pan, circa 1780, painted in underglaze blue with the Island Sampan pattern within a moulded rim, below an associated border, unmarked, 9.5cm diameter See CBE catalogue no. 327 for a very similar example in this pattern.

Lot 156

Lot 158

A pair of Caughley tea bowls, transfer printed in underglaze blue with the Mother and Child pattern, with associated three urns in landscape print and blue line to edge, unmarked, 8cm diameter (2) See C&WP, page 26, for a discussion of this pattern's similarity to another Caughley pattern, the 'Bell Toy', where the author notes the main difference between the two is that the Mother and Child design has a child holding aloft a small clover-leaf shaped hand-fan, rather than a bell toy.

Lot 159

A Caughley dessert dish, circa 1785-93, painted in blue with the Weir pattern between an associated border, underglaze blue C, 27.5cm wide See C&BWP, page 187 where it is said that, 'The Weir pattern is an uncommon one and appears on pieces mostly from the last years of soft-paste production, but may have been introduced in the 1780s.'

Lot 160

A Caughley toyware trio, painted in blue with the Island pattern, circa 1778-92, comprising teabowl, 4cm diameter, saucer, 7cm diameter and a coffee cup, 3.5cm high, teabowl and saucer with S mark (3) See C&WP, page 109, where Godden states that, 'Miniature or 'Toy' teasets were also made and are sometimes referred to as travellers samples, a description not borne out by the numerous references to 'Toy' services in the Chamberlain records.'

Lot 161

A Caughley dessert dish, circa 1785-90, of lobed square form, the interior painted in blue with French Sprigs, beneath a blue line border, with four floral scrolls, S mark, 18cm wide See 28th April, 2010 sale at Halls, lot 27 for a similar, slightly larger example which sold for £270.

Lot 162

A Caughley dessert dish, circa 1790, of lobed square form, the interior painted in blue with the French Sprigs and Festoons pattern, beneath a double blue line border, with both underglaze blue S and impressed Salopian marks, 19cm wide

See also CBE catalogue no.511 for a similar example.
