Caughley pounce pots were individually thrown and finely turned and are therefore quite varied in form. Two other 'bobbin' shaped pounce pots are illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Caughley and Worcester Porcelains (1969), pl.162. Both of these use patterns also found on inkwells. This important jug and others similar relate to the Shrewsbury elections of 1796 and 1802, which saw fierce political battles between two cousins, William and John Hill. Various jugs were made at Caughley and Coalport to be used during the elections in order to canvas support. In 1796 William Hill was elected but the results were highly contentious. A large Caughley caudle cupcirca 1775-80of half-fluted, waisted form, boldly painted in polychrome with a single butterfly and floral sprays, with turquoise and gilt borders and a gilt handle, the interior with a blue and gilt circle border, painted S mark, 9cm diameter and 6.5cm high*Notes: See Berthoud 'Compendium of British Cups', colour plate 1(c), p.45 for a very similar cup.Provenance: The Malcolm Sargeant Collection.The overall condition is good and there are no damages or any restoration. The quality of the polychrome enamels remains good and there are no unseemly scratches or faults to the flowers or butterfly. The main comment to make would that the gilding is quite patchy in areas around the upper rim. There are several sections of missing gilt entirely, revealing the plain blue border underneath. The gilt on the handle has a few patches of general wear but the gilt on the main body and foot rim is generally better. The gilding to the interior has a few patches of further wear, mostly to the outward scrolling sections.Please see additional images.

It is a rare, if previously unrecorded, shape with a Chinese shape handle that is smooth rather than ribbed.The tea bowl and saucer are collection Wright no.510 and were purchased from Peter Wilson's and H&R Cooke.Literature: See Newsletter May 2016 No.66 p17. Unreeded pieces of Caughley in this pattern are rarer than the standard reeded shapes. This lot was previously sold at these rooms in 2017.Shallow chip to the rim of the sparrow beak and an X-shaped hairline to the underside of the saucer.

Small group of 18th Century English porcelain, comprising: a tea bowl and saucer, decorated in the manner of Lowestoft with a 'Long Fence' pattern, together with another tea bowl (probably Caughley), an early Lowestoft-type saucer with underglaze blue feather edge, and a Worcester teapot with feather moulded floral pattern (lacking cover), (5)The teapot is in good order, the floral cup and saucer have pockmarks and some paint imperfections to the underside, and the scene cup and saucer have some slight crazing.
