A Worcester teacup and saucer circa 1785-90 of fluted form, painted with a griffin crest and gilded floral swags with a dentil border, unmarked, saucer 14cm diameter (saucer with stapled repair) Notes: Although the teacup was previously exhibited as no. 641 in the 1999 Caughley Bicentenary Exhibition and subsequently as no. 92 in the 2002 Caughley in Colour Exhibition, recent scholarship has confirmed previous doubts about this attribution. Since that time, both a matching saucer (present with this lot) and a coffee cup appeared on the open market. Comparisons of the relevant dimensions, number of reeds and handles with known examples from both factories demonstrate that these pieces are not consistent with Caughley moulds from this period, and instead point to a Worcester origin.
