A rare bowl attributed to Wirksworth, Derbyshire, circa 1772-77 and a pair of Flight Worcester plates, circa 1788Of deep oval form, the everted rim moulded with a chain-link border above shell-fluting, the centre with a laurel wreath enclosing an underglaze blue and gilt flower spray, further floral sprigs all around, 32.7cm wide, the plates with shaped rims, decorated in blue and gold with Prince of Wales feathers within a circle of tendrils, swags suspended from the rim, 22cm wide, one with crescent mark (3)Footnotes:Gaye Blake Roberts illustrates this curious bowl in her paper 'Wirksworth - The Elusive Manufactory', Derby Porcelain International Society Journal 6 (2009), p.33 where a tentative attribution to Wirksworth is given. Two bowls of similar shape are impressed 'SALOPIAN' but the profile of the underside is different to the present lot, which is unmarked. It is possible that Thomas Turner, the manager at Caughley, purchased the moulds at the closure of the Wirksworth venture in 1777. Turner praises the products made at Wirksworth in a letter of 1778.Many versions of 'Princes Feathers' pattern were made at Caughley, but Flight examples are rarely found.
