A Caughley porcelain low Chelsea ewercirca 1786-91transfer-printed with the Apple and Damsons pattern below a single blue line border, So mark in underglaze blue, 6.2cm highCondition report: There is a very minute hairline to the exterior upper rim, approximately 0.2mm long. Otherwise, the ewer is in a good condition with no further cracks, chips or damages. There is no evidence of any hidden restoration when examined under a UV light. There is one small spot of brown discolouration to the handle, please see the additional images.
A Caughley coffee pot and covercirca 1775-82of baluster form, with floral finial to the cover, painted in underglaze blue with the 'Waiting Chinaman' pattern below a wave and dot border, underglaze blue painted C with serif mark, 24.5cm high (cover restored)Provenance: Featured in the Ironbridge 1999 Caughley Bicentenary Exhibition, no. 439.Condition report: Cover - the finial has been broken and re-attached, there has been some general restoration work to cover the branch and leaves to hide this repair and make the colour consistent. To the rim, there is evidence of restoration work to a small section of the edge, probably to restore a chip (approximately 1.2cm wide). Around this restored chip, there is evidence of re-painting to approximately one-third of the underside of the cover. This restoration has been done to a good standard, but there are some areas of the underside of cover where this re-painting has now flaked away.Coffee pot body - There is a fine stress crack that is noticeable to one side of the coffee pot's spout, at the junction of where the spout meets the body. This stress crack creeps around to cover approximately one half of this lower section of the spout. Likewise to the spout, there is a short, jagged and slightly discoloured V-shaped crack to the upper portion of the spout, near the tip. The foot rim has several nibbles, although most of these appear to be manufacturing flaws.Beyond that, the coffee pot is generally in a good condition, with just some signs of general use/wear in the forms of light scratches to the exterior of the body. Please see additional images.
A Caughley polychrome dessert platecirca 1785-90of lobed form, nicely painted with a central spray of pink, purple and red flowers with foliage, further supplementary sprigs to the border with a gilt and blue rim, painted S mark, 22.5cm diameterNotes: 2005 Caughley Polychrome Exhibition, no. 135 paper label to verso.

A large Coalport porcelain mugearly 19th centuryof cylindrical form, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the Three Flowers pattern and further supplementary decoration to the handle, printed Caughley factory mark to the base,14cm highCondition report: Crazing to the glaze all over. There is one very small nibble to the foot rim and a fine firing stress crack around the upper terminal of the handle. No further damages or any restoration. Generally in a good condition.
A Caughley tea canister, lacking covercirca 1780of reeded form, painted in the 'Gillyflower 1' pattern featuring a four-petalled flower and other florets below a transfer-printed cell diaper border, printed C with serif mark, 15.5cm high (hairline to rim) Provenance: Ex. Godden Reference Collection.
A rare Caughley jugcirca 1785-90of cabbage leaf form with mask-spout, Chamberlain's decorated, painted in sepia with an oval riverscape featuring a ruined tower and a church, with scattered 'Daffodil Group Painter' sprigs in blue enamel with gilded flowers to the rest of the body below a patterned gilt border, unmarked, 19cm highNotes: Caughley are known to have produced a number of different services which featured landscapes painted in underglaze blue, but an enamel sepia scene such as this is very rare. More than likely an imaginary scene, this finely painted picturesque view can be attributed to John Muchall who was the leading landscape artist at Chamberlain's decorating studio at the time.Literature: See Caughley in Colour Exhibition catalogue, 2005. Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, pgs. 19-20 for a discussion of Muchall’s work.Condition report: In a good, original condition with no damages or restorations. There are some slight areas of rubbing/wear to the gilding around the rim, most noticeably to the tip of the spout and a few further small sections to the interior of the upper rim. One branch of the gilded leaves to one side of the jug also has some further loss of the gilding, but not disfiguring. Beyond that, the painting is good and there are no obvious large scratches or areas of wear through the main sepia landscape panel, although there is one very small scratch to the right-hand side of the panel (approximately 0.3mm wide)The mask-head on the spout has three very small glaze manufacturing flaws. Overall, there are some areas of light speckling of kiln dust/grit. Please see additional images for all of the items above in closer detail.
A Caughley cream jug, circa 1780-90, transfer-printed in with the 'Fenced Garden' pattern in underglaze blue, Sx mark, 8.5cm high (restored, cracked)Condition report: Nearly all of the original gilding to the upper rim has been rubbed away. There is a fine hairline crack that runs from the upper rim right down to and through the base. When examined under UV light, there is evidence of a foot rim chip repair and surrounding over-paint around the totality of the base to even out the colour, some of which is now slightly flaking to the interior of the base. This base restoration has also hidden the hairline crack to the base, which is now only visible under a bright torch.
A rare and large Caughley dessert centre dishcirca 1790-93of canted oval form with an elaborately moulded lobed and cusped rim, painted with a gilt spray of foliage to the centre and a 'Flaming Pearl' blue, gilt and red border to the exterior rim, unmarked,36.5cm wideNotes: This is one of only three recorded examples of this size and shape known, the other examples found in the Donegal and Butterfly services.Condition report: In a good, original condition with no damages or any restorations. There are a couple of small nibbles to the underside of the foot rim, which mainly appear to have been glazed and therefore manufacturing flaws. Likewise to the underside, there are several areas of soot/kiln grit deposits alongside further, lighter, speckles to the interior of the dish. In general, the gilding remains strong and bright and the gilding around the upper interior rim is in particularly good condition. However, there are a few small areas of wear/rubbing to the gilding around the interior of the base and some further very minor wear to the exterior of the upper rim, as a consequence of general handling.
A Caughley chestnut basket, cover and stand circa 1780-90 of quatrefoil form and applied with flowers, the stand transfer-printed in underglaze blue with rare Ripe Pomegranate pattern, basket 21cm wide, the stand 28cm wide (restored) Provenance: Ex. Wright Collection no. 707b.Condition report: Basket cover - One of the small blue circular flowers is missing from the entwined branch handle. There is a firing crack running through one of the leaves. On the underside of the cover, there are two faint hairlines visible on two supports between the pierced sections. There is also a manufacturing flaw to the underside of the rim.Basket - After inspecting under UV, it appears as though the entire portion of the base has previously been broken off and split into two pieces. It is possible it was either placed down too roughly on a hard surface or mistreated by dunking into hot water. Still visible to the naked eye is the crack which rounds right around the interior of the lower portion of the basket, and which appears to have been left undisguised. Secondary to this damage and repair is a body crack that runs right through one side of the basket, which has presumably been stabilised and restored. The restoration of this area is now yellowed. The flowers surrounding each handle have numerous firing cracks, but neither handles have any damages or restoration.Stand - There is a long crack that runs right around 1/2 of the centre portion of the stand, which has been stabilised with some areas of associated over-painting. One of the small circular flowers on one handle has been restored and there are two breakages to two petals on the handles, alongside a couple of smaller nibbles to the petals/leaves elsewhere. There is a firing crack to the underside of the foot rim. Please see additional images.
