AN ARCHIVE OF ITEMS RELATING TO GENERAL SIR LEWIS STRATFORD TOLLEMARCHE HALLIDAY, V.C, K.C.B., D.L. of The Royal Marines (b.1870-d.1966), the archive including a group of General Halliday`s medals in miniature including the Victoria Cross, his uniform with bars, swagger stick, riding boots, Sam Brown, epaulettes, artillery beret, a feathered plume and further items including kit bag, bowler hats, various ephemera including photographs of General Halliday next to George VI, various invitations to the Royal Marines annual dinner, garden parties at Buckingham Palace, various newspaper cuttings, taking the salute at Trouping the Colour by Plymouth Royal Marines in 1938 and further items. (See Part Illustration). General Halliday won his Victoria Cross during the 1900 Boxer Uprising in China when at that stage, a Captain in the Royal Marine Light Infantry and on June 24th Captain Halliday in command of 20 marines whilst their compound was surrounded, engaged a party of the enemy but before he could use his revolver he was shot through the left shoulder at point blank range, the bullet fracturing the shoulder and carrying away part of the lung, despite the severity of his wound Captain Halliday killed four of his assailants and told his men to carry on while he walked back unaided to the hospital refusing escort and aid so as not to diminish the number of men engaged in the saute.

Signed 3.5 x 4.5 vintage photograph, a candid image of Monty standing in a full length pose wearing his military uniform and beret. Surrounded by a small group of servicemen, the Field Marshal stands in a field having just climbed out of an aeroplane which can be seen in the immediate background. MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A good vintage signed 5.5 x 4.5 photograph, an unusual official War Office photograph of Monty, with his back to the camera, walking towards the large Canadian National Vimy Memorial at Givenchy-en-Gohelle. The Field Marshal, wearing his beret, is accompanied by another soldier. Signed ('B. L. Montgomery, Field Marshal') in fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image and additionally annotated in his hand Canadian War Memorial on the VIMY RIDGE to the clear background. Rare in this form. VG. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is one of Canada's most important overseas war memorials and is dedicated to the Canadians who gave their lives in the First World War. It was unveiled by King Edward VIII in 1936 and took 11 years to construct.
