Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677), Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel (1512-1580) portrait on vellum, wearing gold figured blue/grey doublet, fur waistcoat and black beret trimmed with gold and white plume, in a modern circular ebonised wooden frame, 58mm diameter. (Provenance ; Bonhams fine portrait miniature sale, 28th April 2005, lot 203)Only a small number of portrait miniatures by Wenceslas Hollar, an artist more commonly associated with topographical etchings, are known. One, depicting Katherine of Aragon (previously identified as Margaret Roper), signed and dated 1652, is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 421499). It is deemed to be a copy of an earlier portrait miniature by Lucas Horenbout, court miniaturist to King Henry VIII. Similarly, the portrait miniature of Jane Seymour sold alongside the present lot at Bonhams, London, 25 April 2005, lot 202, is a copy of an earlier work by another of Henry VIII’s painters, Hans Holbein the Younger, and is signed and dated 1648. A prototype for the present portrait has not yet been identified but there are some similarities with a painting attributed to Hans Eworth of 1558, an engraving of which by John Henry Robinson is in the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG D25140). Hollar was born in Prague and studied topographical engraving in Frankfurt. In 1636 he met Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel (1586-1646) whom he accompanied to London and received his patronage. By 1642 he was in the service of James, Duke of York. As a Royalist, he struggled to work during the Civil War and in 1645 he was captured but managed to escape and found work in Antwerp. In 1652 he returned to London and produced illustrations for books. His income was greatly affected by the Civil War and his drop in status and he died in poverty. The sitter became a page at the court of Henry VIIII aged 15. He was later summoned to Parliament and attended the trials of Anne Boleyn and her alleged lover. On his father’s death in 1544 he became Lord Arundel was made a Knight of the Garter and subsequently Lord Chamberlain. After the King’s death, he was Lord High Constable at Edward VI’s coronation, and again at Queen Mary’s coronation. He served Queen Mary, notably as Lieutenant General of the forces when war with France looked imminent, and he retained his offices under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I who recognised his value and importance at court, but did not trust him. He was arrested on suspicion of treason following a number of plots to depose the Queen and was placed under house arrest. He died as a free man, after returning to the privy council for a number of years, and was buried at Arundel Castle. Until the present lot was sold alongside the miniature of Jane Seymour at Bonhams in 2005, the Royal Collection’s portrait miniature of Katherine of Aragon was the only miniature by Hollar that had been identified. The sitter in that portrait was for a long time identified as Margaret Roper. It appears that Hollar had access to portraits in the collection of the 14th Earl of Arundell and executed copies. The comparative portrait by Hans Eworth mentioned in the catalogue note is possibly in the collection of the Duke of Norfolk. This information comes from the Online Dictionary of National Biography entry which includes a black and white image of the painting from the Courtauld Photographic Survey, the caption acknowledging the Duke of Norfolk.
