A Second World War Royal Marines Commando green beret, bearing a label with inscription Ex/1189, T A M Cooke (otherwise un-marked), together with related campaign medals, "Royal Marines" and "Commando" embroidered titles, "housewife" sewing kit, KD belt, passport, Order for Release from Naval Service, and numerous photographs Thomas Alexander Menin COOKE, born in Ryde, Isle of Wight, 15 January 1919. Educated at Erith County School and the City of London School before joining Westminster Bank as a Junior Clerk in 1936. During WWII served with the 1st Royal Marines Battalion and after completing Commando training at Achnacarry in October 1943, with 42 RM Commando (3 Commando Brigade). In November 1943, sailed from Gourock aboard HMT Ranchi. At the end of November 1943, the convoy of which the Ranchi was part, came under attack from a formation of Luftwaffe bombers. A bomb hit the Ranchi's forecastle, penetrated the deck and then exited through the vessel's other side before exploding in the water. The vessel subsequently diverted to Alexandria for repairs. 42 RM Commando re-joined 3rd Commando Brigade at Kedgaon in January 1944. The unit then underwent training near Belgaum before moving to Cocanada. From there sent to Trincomalee, Chittagong and then to Maungdaw where they relieved the 1st Ox and Bucks. In January 1945, they took part in an unopposed landing at Akyab Island. Later that same month, joined the assault on the Myebon peninsula and Kangaw, culminating in the battle for Hill 170. In late 1945, the Brigade was sent to Hong Kong to carry out policing duties. Marine Cooke was released from service on 27 February 1946. After the war, he worked for the Standard Bank of South Africa in Nyasaland. He died in Ipswich in 2001.
