WW2 British Insignia and Document Grouping of 5498696 Warrant Officer J M White Army Air Corps / 2nd Special Air Service (S.A.S), interesting grouping of items attributed to Warrant Officer White who served with the Army Air Corps, Parachute Regiment and the Special Air Service during WW2, being mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct in North West Europe, London Gazette 10th May 1945. The grouping consists of Warrant Officer White’s original wartime SAS parachute wing which is an embroidered example with a brass pin back fixing to the reverse. The wing has fine embroidery to the parachute canopy and feathers in the wing. This design is typical of early wartime wings. This wing has been attached to a bullion embroidered SAS blazer badge and a small chrome and enamel pin back regimental badge is also attached. The insignia comes with his named Liberation of Norway 8th May 1945 citation which is named to him, “5498696 P Pte J M White A.A.C” and the publication “THE ALLIES IN NORWAY”. An interesting grouping, worthy of further research. In March 1944, the 1st and 2nd SAS Regiments returned from overseas to the United Kingdom and joined a newly formed SAS Brigade of the Army Air Corps. The unit took part in the invasion of mainland Europe, D-Day, Normandy in June 1944 and in May 1945 the 1st and 2nd SAS were sent to Norway to disarm the 300,000-strong German garrison. Members of the 2nd SAS were allowed to wear the insignia of the Special Air Service but the uniform and beret of the Army Air Corps / Parachute regiment, including Pegasus formation signs and maroon berets.
