Bennett (Denton and Reddish): I am grateful for the opportunity to raise, in a short debate, the Government's failure to recommend or the Queen to award campaign medals to those who served in the Suez canal zone between 1951and 1954. I had hoped that there would be more time for the debate because many other hon. Members are concerned about the issue. I am pleased that my hon. Friend the Member for Wentworth (Mr. Healey) is present; no doubt he will hope to speak, and he has my permission and that of the Minister to do so briefly. My hon. Friend the Member for Hornchurch (Mr. Cryer) has also raised questions about the matter. I place on the record my appreciation of my constituent Mr. Davenport, who has been keeping me up to speed on the issue, and of the late Pip Newton, who led the delegation to press the case with my hon. Friend the Minister for the Armed Forces, 18 months or so ago, when my hon. Friend was a junior Minister. Mr. Newton worked extremely hard to press the campaign. I also wish to record my appreciation for Mr. Blackburn, Mr. Golder and Mr. Radford for all their work in documenting the case.2003 Daily Telegraph article - Thousands of British troops who served in the Suez canal emergency will finally be honoured, the government will announce tomorrow. The Queen has given royal assent to the issuing of a General Service Medal with a special clasp for veterans who served in Egypt from 1951-54. The MOD will spell out plans tomorrow to produce the medals. Veterans could get them as early as next month. An estimated 200,000 British troops served in the canal zone during the emergency - which preceded the Suez crisis of 1956 - and more than 300 people were killed. Campaign medals are not normally awarded more than five years after a conflict, but the prime minister, Tony Blair, has acknowledged the operation. The emergency in Oct 1951 when the Egyptian government unilaterally overturned a 1936 treaty with London that governed the number of British troops in the canal zone, triggering an anti-British guerrilla campaign. Col Newton Career22.10.1939 commissioned, The Royal Sussex Regiment11.11.1939 - 1939 Regimental Depot, The Royal Sussex Regiment (Chichester)1939 - 29.05.1940 Training Centre, The Royal Sussex Regiment (Seaford)30.05.1940 - 08.1941 5th Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment (Tetbury, then Thorn, Yorkshire, then Seaford, then Brasted, then Westerham, and finally Ringwold, near Dover)08.11.1940 - 07.02.1941 Second-in-Command of a Company08.02.1941 - 08.1941 Company Commander08.1941 - 14.03.1942 Commandant, 44th Divisional NCO School (Bridge, near Canterbury, from 01.1942 Tonbridge)15.03.1942 - 25.04.1942 Commandant, 44th Divisional Battle School (Tonbridge)26.04.1942 - 09.1942 Company Commander, 5th Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment (UK, Western Desert)09.1942 - 12.1942 Staff Captain, 133rd Lorried Infantry Brigade (Western Desert)01.1943 - 10.1943 Middle East Officers' Cadet Training Unit (Acre, Palestine)10.1943 - 01.1944 Force 133 (as proposed Liaison Officer with the partisans in Greece; on the cancellation of this operation, he returned to the UK)02.1944 - 07.1944 2nd Special Air Service Regiment (Ayr, Scotland & Ainsdale)08.08.1944 - 07.12.1944 Staff Captain, 21st Army Group (Normandy, France & Brussels, Belgium) [embarked for Normandy 27.07.1944]12.1944 - 01.1945 attached to HQ 43rd Infantry Division on the Dutch-German border (for a month)04.01.1945 - 05.07.1945 Staff College, Camberley (psc)01.08.1945 - 18.09.1945 Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General (DAAG) (Wehrmacht), British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) (Bad Oeynhausen) [responsible for the disbandment of the German Army]29.10.1945 - 06.10.1946 Deputy Assistant Military Secretary (DAMS), British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) (Bad Oeynhausen)07.10.1946 - 01.03.1948 General Staff Officer, 2nd grade (GSO2), British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) (Bad Oeynhausen)03.1948 - 04.1948 parachute course (Aldershot)05.1948 - 11.1948 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (Itzehoe & Hildesheim)11.1948 - 12.1948 company commander's course (Warminster)12.1948 - 12.1950 Adjutant, 10th Battalion The Parachute Regiment (TA) (London)05.02.1951 - 14.12.1952 Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General (DAQMG), Suez Canal North District in El Ballah, Egypt, and from 16.10.1951 HQ 1st Infantry Division District at Ferry Point, Ismalia (MBE)12.1952 - 01.1955 Company Commander, 1st Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment (Canal Zone, Tidworth (UK) & Minden, Germany)08.01.1955 - 24.01.1957 Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General (DAAG), War Office (London)02.1957 - 02.1958 1st Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment (Korea & Gibraltar) (initially Officer Commanding, A Company, from 07.1957 Second-in-Command of the Battalion)02.1958 - 04.1960 Officer Commanding, The Depot, The Royal Sussex Regiment (Chichester)06.05.1960 - 17.09.1962 Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment (Holywood, Northern Ireland, later Shorncliffe)17.09.1962 - 10.01.1964 General Staff Officer, 1st grade (GSO1), HQ Gurkha Division, Malaya Area (Serembang)11.01.1964 - 09.05.1965 General Staff Officer, 1st grade (GSO1), HQ 17th Division, Land Forces Borneo (Kluang, Malaya & Labuan, Borneo)09.07.1965 - 10.1968 Colonel General Staff (Combat Development), Ministry of Defence (London)11.1968 - 11.1970 UK Representative at the United States Command and General Staff College (Fort Leavenworth, Kansas)12.1970 - 19.08.1972 Colonel (M3), Ministry of Defence (London)Secretary of the Army Museums Ogilby Trust, 1972-1989. GERMAN ARMY PANZER BERET COVER A fine example of the black wool beret cover worn by a member of the German army's panzer corps. This cover would have been stretched over an interior 'crash helmet' constructed of rubber and worn for the purpose of protecting the wearer's head while inside a tank. The cover is rough 12.5 in. diameter with a BeVo style machine-embroidered cloth national eagle above a cockade between a double spray of oak leaves. Interestingly, affixed over the red cockade at the center is a Totenkopf ('dead head') unit insignia of the German Panzer Corps. This insignia, usually worn on the collar tabs of panzer soldiers, was likely affixed on purpose to give it the appearance of a Waffen-SS Panzer beret, for which it may have at one time been substituted. No evidence of moth holes or tears, very fine condition.

‘When arriving at the scene of a raid I always send him ashore in a folboat to search out the enemy dispositions of guns and men’ A rare Second War ‘Levant Schooner Flotilla’ Special Forces D.S.M., 1943 ‘Mine-Disposal’ B.E.M. group of seven awarded to Petty Officer L. G. Taber, Royal Navy Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (P.O. L. G. Taber. B.E.M. P/JX 139146); British Empire Medal, (Military) G.VI.R., 1st issue (P.O. Leonard G. Taber, P/JX.139146); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-45, these last five unnamed as issued, together with R.L.S.S. bronze medal (L. G. Taber, July 1933) in case of issue, first two with light edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise very fine or better (8) £3,000-£4,000 --- D.S.M. London Gazette 14 August 1945: ‘For the clearance of the Aegean and the relief of Greece during the period 1944-1945.’ The following recommendation by his Skipper, Lieutenant Bernard Stipetic, R.N.R., commanding Anglo-Hellenic Schooner 1 (awarded a D.S.C. in the same gazette) confirms his earlier award of ‘British Empire Medal - for mine-disposal’, and states: ‘Petty Officer Leonard George Taber, H.M.S. Mosquito [Coastal Forces base at Alexandria]. Action or Operation – Served as coxswain of many of the Anglo-Hellenic schooners, engaged in the landing and picking up of the raiding and reconnaissance parties in the enemy-controlled Aegean Islands. Specific act or service – This rating at all times shows determination in pressing home an attack and I have come to rely on him for his determination and keenness. When arriving at the scene of a raid I always send him ashore in a folboat to search out the enemy dispositions of guns and men. He has the ability to obtain this information in its entirety and report back accurately. On his report largely depends my decision as to how the raid is to be effected and where to lie up the following day. His coolness and devotion to duty while obtaining this information on enemy territory surrounded by possible informants is exemplary. This is done on every enemy island we go to. On the last raid I put him in charge of a captured caique with three undesirable and bellicose aliens. He showed considerable tact and ingenuity in making them work as part of his scratch crew and bringing the boat safely to port under tricky weather conditions.’ B.E.M. London Gazette 1 January 1944. Awarded whilst on the books of H.M.S. Prometheus, depot ship for patrol service personnel in the Mediterranean, for services with a naval mine-disposal unit which accompanied the Eighth Army in its advance from Alamein. Leonard George Taber was born in Portsmouth to a naval family but at around twelve years of age, he and his two brothers, because of family hardship, were sent to the Naval School at Greenwich, effectively an orphanage. He and his brothers all joined the Royal Navy and served throughout the Second World War. After serving in a naval mine disposal unit in North Africa, he volunteered for service in Special Forces and was posted to the Levant Schooner Flotilla. The activities of the schooners and caiques of the Levant Schooner Flotilla, a recognised “Commando” unit, are described in some detail in Undercover Sailors by A. Cecil Hampshire and Dust upon the Sea by W. E. Benyon-Tinker. The following from Undercover Sailors, pp 54-55, describes Petty Officer Leonard Taber: ‘Not the least important and hazardous aspect of Raiding Force work was reconnaissance. One of the caiques engaged in this work was commanded, not entirely unusually, by a petty officer who, after working with a naval mine disposal unit which accompanied the Eighth Army during its advance from Alamein had volunteered to transfer to the Levant Schooner Flotilla. Ordered to take a Royal Marine patrol on a reconnaissance of the island of Milos, in the western Cyclades, he wrote in a report remarkable for its understatement: “Milos was not a nice place to approach because of enemy D/F gear, searchlights and shore batteries. We therefore decided to land the marines on Kimilos, a neighbouring island, and let them paddle across to Milos in folboats. While we were lying up in Polygandros waiting to effect the pickup in due course, a gentleman informed us that on another island there were thirteen Germans desirous of surrendering. I said we’d take them, and later that day they entered harbour in their own boat and secured alongside. They were dirty and hungry and had had enough of the war. The Milos reconnaissance having been successfully completed, we made a round trip of Naxos, Ios, Siphanos and Siphos. But on our way back to base the engine seized up and refused to budge. We had to sail, and once used our two sweeps manned by twelve men on each side. One night with the wind gale force we logged twelve knots for two hours. Finally, however, the wind failed altogether, and we had to be towed the last 40 miles along the gulf of Cos to base.” This cheerfully laconic Lower Deck skipper, who spent twelve months in the flotilla, was eventually awarded the DSM and BEM.’ Taber received shrapnel wounds in his leg and arm, and after the war was discharged suffering from tuberculosis. He moved to Scotland and worked in the Highlands as a shepherd and then as a gardener. There, aged 36, he met his wife who was working there in a hotel during the summer months. They had three children and moved to Essex around 1970. He was active in naval organisations, and proudly wore his green beret at reunions. The British Legion and the Royal Naval Association were strongly represented at his funeral. (Personal information provided by Leonard Taber’s eldest daughter in 2001). Sold with copied recommendation and extracts from both Undercover Sailors by A. Cecil Hampshire and Dust upon the Sea by W. E. Benyon-Tinker.

WW2 British Parachute Regiment Beret and Cloth Insignia Grouping of Walter Jokel who Captured Irma Grese the Head Warden of the Women’s Camp in Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp and was Tasked with Her Interrogation, the wartime beret appears to date from 1945, it shows heavy service wear and has some moth damage. Beret with leather trim and black cloth lining has the remains of the war department broad arrow stamp and possible date letter “Z” for 1945. Beret is complete with a chromed beret badge for the Parachute regiment. Leather patch behind the air vent gromets. Spiralling pattern to the top of the beret. Accompanied by his post war 1955 dated Airborne forces beret, by this time he was a Second Lieutenant in the Parachute regiment. The berets are accompanied by a large grouping of both cloth and metal insignia, including various pairs of parachute jump wings, printed and embroidered Pegasus formation signs, rank badges, medal ribbons, airborne pattern rank pips, etc. Also with his Normandy 1944 commemorative medal in its box and various items of wartime and post war paperwork. Walter Jokel lied about his age when he enlisted for service in WW2. Because he was born in Austria, he spoke fluent German, because of this he was placed under the Field Security Section of the Intelligence Corps. Newspaper articles written during the 50 year commemoration of the liberation of the Belsen camp gives us details of Walters time with Irma Grese and how he found her, “He found a young woman hiding in a barn a few miles away from the camp – her blonde hair was matted with straw and she wore only the tattered remains of her Nazi uniform. She looked scared”. Jokel was selected as her sole interrogator, he states in the article, “despite 12 intense days alone with her – he never saw fear in her blue eyes again, only glee”. He continues to say, “I thought I had been hardened by the war. I thought nothing could shock me. But Grese did. In the seclusion of a small wooden hut, she boasted to Jokel about her violent acts”. The evidence that Jokel provided at the Belsen War Crimes trial, helped convict Irma Grese of war crimes and he watched as she was hanged at Hamelin in December 1945. Walter Jokel parachuted into Normandy on 6th June 1944, he also participated in Operation Market Garden and the Rhine Crossing. See lot 1215, 1245 and 1498 for the souvenirs Jokel brought home as war booty. This collection has been consigned directly from the daughter of Walter Jokel and has never been offered on the collecting market before.
