Kal Gajoum (b. 1968, Libya)A rainy, wintery, early evening Carlisle city centre prospect, looking past the Old Town Hall towards Scotch Street from the Market Cross, umbrella-shaded figures silhouetted against the warm light of shop and cafe windows, oil on canvas, signed and dated '02, in gilt mould frames, 37 cm x 32 cm overall[Born in Libya, and now residing in Quebec, Gajoum studied painting in Italy and France. He developed his now instantly recognisable style, vibrant tones built up by the palette knife, during his time in Malta. His fleeting depictions of modern cityscapes observe the Impressionistic principle of ephemerality, and he captures the unfolding scene directly and succinctly. The artist resided at Carlisle from 1999 to 2003. His work now attracts much interest internationally, commanding prices of up to five figures. Gajoum was the official artist of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The hallmarks of his recent work can be seen to take root in this depiction of Carlisle's Old Town Hall.]https://kalgajoum.com/ https://www.galleryrouge.co.uk/kal-gajoum (Artist's Resale Rights may apply)

Maud Earl (British, 1863-1943)Buchanan's Whisky advert with a Black Labrador lithographframed 51.5 x 43.5cm (20 1/4 x 17 1/8in)within a matching frame inscribed with 'Black & White' and 'Scotch Whisky'Footnotes:The image was famously published in Buchanan's Black & White Scotch Whisky advertisements in 1922 and 1923. Previously the Scottish Terrier and West Highland Terrier (Scottie and Westie) breeds were used as branding for their whisky. Other breeds were used to promote their whisky, often commissioning paintings from the top animal painters of the day, such as here with Maud Earl. Other Maud Earl commissions included three Yorkshire Terriers, an English Pointer, four West Highland Terriers, a Scottish Terrier, three Bull Terriers, and puppies in a basket. The present lot is rare being complete in Buchanan's original black frame inscribed, top 'Black & White' then bottom 'Scotch Whisky'.  For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
