FIVE DUNMORE POTTERY ANIMAL FIGURES PETER GARDNER, LATE 19TH CENTURY comprising a green glazed frog singing ‘The Woods O Dunmore’; a treacle glazed pig; a comical grotesque dog; a brown glazed pug; and a green/blue glazed monkey; all impressed DUNMORE (5) pig 16cm long, frog 12cm high, monkey 6.4cm high Provenance: The Maisels Collection of British Ceramics Note: The Dunmore Pottery was situated in Airth, north of Alloa, on the estate of the Earl of Dunmore. Peter Gardner (born 1834) was the third generation of potters at Dunmore. He ran the pottery from 1866. Until this time it had produced utilitarian wares but Gardner radically altered the nature of the ware made at Dunmore, producing some outstanding art pottery and through connections introduced by the Earl and Countess of Dunmore, enjoyed aristocratic and royal patronage, and exhibited work at international exhibitions. Wares produced included vases, urns, plaques, garden pottery and animal grotesques. The green pottery frog included in this lot is one of Peter Gardner's comical and charming designs. The frog sings lustily a romantic song entitled ‘The Woods of Dunmore’. The song appeared in around 1835 and features in ‘Auld Scotch Songs and Ballads', arranged by Sinclair Dunn. Falkirk Council have an example of this model in thier collection.

* Gillray (James). The Injured Count, S[trathmore] - published by C. Morgan, circa 1786, uncoloured etching, mount stained and toned, one repaired closed tear, 280 x 405 mm, together with John Bull, Baited by Dogs of Excise, H. Humphrey, April 9th 1790, uncoloured mixed method engraving on wove, trimmed to the neat line and tipped on to near-contemporary laid paper, one marginal tear causing slight loss, 260 x 410 mm, with The Board of Controul, or the Blessings of a Scotch Dictator, published by R. Phillips March 20th 1787, uncoloured etching on laid, slight creasing, torn in the lower right corner with loss to margin but no affecting the printed image, 270 x 375 mmQTY: (3)NOTE:BM Satires 7013; 7640 & 7152 respectively. This semi-pornographic scene of a drunken Mary Eleanor Lyon, Countess of Strathmore, was published anonymously. This print which is not dated, was signed 'JS' to make it look as if it was the work of the Pittite caricaturist James Sayer. The print was probably sponsored by Lady Strathmore's husband (the figure behind the screen) or someone in his circle such as the Duke of Norfolk. The defamation of the Countess, who was said to prefer her cats to her son, may also have been made in the hope that the Countess would pay to suppress it (in Clayton's words the 'intersection between blackmail and pornography'). She is depicted bare-breasted, suckling two cats and raising a glass of gin whilst a servant standing behind her, invites her to bed. In the background, her land agent, James Farrer, inspects a map of her estates. Farrer was the man Lord Strathmore accused of having an affair with his wife. The caricature has enabled Gillray to accuse the Countess of being an unnatural and perverse mother, who rejects her son and cuckolds her husband. Lord Strathmore probably hoped that this would help him counter the divorce proceedings that the Countess brought against him. It failed because the countess won her divorce, which was a highly unusual victory for a woman at this time. T. Clayton, James Gillray, a Revolution in Satire, p. 103.

After its original owners went bankrupt, it was acquired by W.P. Lowrie and later by James Buchanan, who primarily used its distillate for blending, limiting its visibility as a single malt. GLENFARCLAS 25 YEARS OLD | Stated age: 25 years old | ABV: 43% | Region: Speyside | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Glenfarclas is a Scottish distillery in the Speyside region, near the village of Ballindalloch. It was founded in 1836 and since 1865 it has been managed by the Grant family, who have been running it for six generations. The distillery's name means "valley of green grass", a reference to the rich grasslands surrounding its surroundings. This long-standing family supervision allows Glenfarclas to maintain traditional production methods and a careful approach to distillation, which is reflected in the character of their whisky. The Grants are known for their careful business strategy and thoughtful approach to growth. As George Grant, the sixth generation of the family says, "We've been through 22 recessions. We only make what we can afford and we never borrow to make it." This attitude allowed the distillery to increase its stock even when others were cutting production, ensuring it had enough older whiskeys to sell. Glenfarclas is also careful to maintain a strong brand by avoiding collaboration with independent bottlers. An important feature of Glenfarclas is its aging of whiskey in Oloroso sherry casks, which gives the whiskey rich notes of dried fruit, spice and sweetness. In 2007 saw the launch of the prestigious The Family Casks series, which includes vintage editions of whiskey since 1954. This project is one of the most extensive among Scottish distilleries. | Bottle description | Glenfarclas Aged 25 Years is a single malt whisky, bottled directly by the Glenfarclas distillery, which is known for its long tradition of using sherry casks to mature its whiskies. In 1993, it pioneered "secondary" aging with its DoubleWood edition, maturing whisky first in ex-bourbon casks and then in ex-sherry casks. MACALLAN FINE OAK 18 YEARS OLD | Stated age: 18 years old | ABV: 43% | Region: Highland | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | The Macallan is a prestigious Scottish whisky distillery located in Speyside and is regarded as one of the world's most respected single malt whisky brands. Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, it is now owned by the Edrington Group. While The Macallan was initially a key ingredient in blended whiskies, it wasn't until the 1980s, amid declining demand for blends, that it shifted focus to single malts. A marketing team led by Allan Shiach, Frank Newlands, Hugh Mitcalfe, and Willie Phillips positioned The Macallan as a premium whisky, earning it the nickname "Cognac whisky." The brand gained wider appeal through imaginative and provocative ad campaigns. A major milestone was the launch of the "Fine & Rare" series and a collaboration with Lalique, which created special decanters for rare, aged editions like the 50- and 60-year-old whiskies. This helped The Macallan carve out a place in the luxury whisky market. Today, it is one of the most sought-after whiskies in the world, cherished by connoisseurs, collectors, and investors alike. | Bottle description | The Macallan Fine Oak 18 Years Old is a single malt whisky aged for at least 18 years in a combination of three types of casks: bourbon and sherry casks made from both European and American oak. MORTLACH 1989 RAW CASK 17 YEARS OLD | Distilled: 31.10.1989 | Bottled: 08/2007 | Stated age: 17 years old | ABV: 58,4% | Region: Speyside | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Mortlach is a Scottish distillery located in the Speyside region, specifically in the town of Dufftown. Founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh, and Alex Gordon, it briefly passed through the hands of the Grant brothers of Glen Grant before being taken over by George Cowie and his son Alexander. The Cowies revitalized whisky production in the 1850s, establishing Mortlach as a key distillery, particularly for its contribution to blended whiskies. The distillery remained in the Cowie family until 1923, when it was acquired by John Walker & Sons, eventually becoming part of DCL (now Diageo). Mortlach is renowned for its unique distillation process, where the whisky is distilled 2.81 times, resulting in a heavy, rich, and meaty character. While other distilleries produce similarly robust spirits, such as Benrinnes and Dailuaine, none match the depth and richness of Mortlach's whisky. This distinctive quality makes Mortlach a prized component in blended whiskies, particularly Johnnie Walker. Due to its importance in blending, Mortlach single malts were rarely seen until recent years. Apart from occasional independent bottlings and a 16-year-old offering in Diageo's Flora & Fauna range, single malts were scarce. However, its reputation for robustness has made it increasingly valued by whisky enthusiasts. | Bottle description | Mortlach 1989 Raw Cask is a single malt whisky bottled by independent bottler Blackadder as part of the Raw Cask series, renowned for its authenticity as it is bottled directly from the cask without chill filtration or coloring, preserving even small particles from the cask. This whisky was matured for 17 years in sherry butt No. 5150.Nose: Rich notes of dark fruit, sherry, and spices.Taste: Intense, with strong flavors of raisins, caramel, and wood.Finish: Long with lingering dried fruit and oak notes. The auctioned bottle is No. 6 of 674 bottled.Size: 700 ml | Duty stamp: CZ | Packaging: without packaging
CRAGGANMORE 1993 14 YEARS OLD | Distilled: 1993 | Bottled: 2007 | Stated age: 14 years old | ABV: 46% | Region: Speyside | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Cragganmore is a Scottish distillery in Speyside, founded in 1869 by John Smith, notable for its unique stills that create a complex spirit with meaty, citrus, spicy, and fruity notes. Its whisky has received an A1 rating from blenders, indicating exceptional quality. While part of Diageo's Classic Malts range, much of its production is utilized in blends like Johnnie Walker. Despite its complexity, Cragganmore is often considered a hidden gem due to the limited availability of its single malt versions. | Bottle description | Cragganmore 1993 is a single malt whisky bottled by independent bottler Murray McDavid. Distilled in 1993, this whisky was first matured in bourbon casks and then finished in Guigal Cotes Rotie Syrah casks. LAGAVULIN 16 YEARS OLD | Stated age: 16 years old | ABV: 43% | Region: Islay | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Lagavulin is an iconic distillery located on the island of Islay, founded in 1816 by John Johnston, though the site had been home to illegal distilling prior to its establishment. Nestled between Ardbeg and Laphroaig, Lagavulin is renowned for its heavily smoky and peaty character. In 1862, the distillery was purchased by John Logan Mackie. His nephew, Sir Peter Mackie, a prominent figure in the whiskey industry and creator of the famous White Horse blend, played a significant role in its development. After losing exclusive representation to Laphroaig, Mackie constructed a malt mill on Lagavulin's grounds in 1908. However, despite its aim to produce whiskey akin to Laphroaig's, it never succeeded, and the whiskey produced bore little resemblance to Lagavulin's. A fictional cask from Lagavulin prominently featured in Ken Loach's film The Angel's Share. Today, Lagavulin is part of Diageo's Classic Malts range, with its most famous expression being Lagavulin 16 Year Old, regarded as one of the best peated whiskeys on the market. In addition to this staple bottling, limited editions are regularly released, including the Distiller's Edition, Diageo Special Releases, and offerings for the Feis Ile festival. | Bottle description | Lagavulin Aged 16 Years is one of the most iconic single malt whiskies from the Islay region, renowned for its intense yet subtle smoky character. This whisky is aged for a minimum of 16 years in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, resulting in a rich flavor profile with deep layers of smoke, sweetness, and peat.Nose: Strongly smoky with distinct notes of peat, sea salt, and dried fruit, complemented by subtle vanilla and caramel sweetness, along with sherry and wood notes.Taste: Full and intense with rich smoke, peat, caramel, and vanilla sweetness, along with dark fruit, raisin, and chocolate tones from the sherry casks.
