Charles Shirreff (Scottish, 1750-1831) Portrait of Colonel Gordon Skelly (1767-1828), wearing the uniform of the Royal Regiment of Foot watercolour 6.70 x 5cm (3 x 2in) Other Notes: Gordon Skelly was born in Yarm, North Yorkshire, in 1767. In 1782, at the age of fifteen, he entered the army as ensign in the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment of Foot and in 1789 was promoted to Lieutenant. In 1783 the 1st Battalion of the 1st Regiment of Foot was stationed in Ireland and in 1790 they were transferred to Jamaica where they remained for four years, although Skelly remained in Yorkshire on recruiting duty. He is recorded as a Major in the Scotch Brigade (Grand Army) in 1794/5 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1799. In 1799 he fought at the siege of Seringapatam, the decisive battle which ended the third Anglo-Mysore War. Skelly's uniform indicates this would have been painted prior to his promotion to Captain in 1794, and before Shirreff's departure to India the following year. Skelly married Elizabeth Newsam shortly after the battle of Seringapatam in 1800, and they had five children. He is represented in a painting entitled 'Panorama of the Storming of Seringapatam' by Sir Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842). Perhaps a little loss of colour but fine.
