Of shaped, circular form, the plates engraved with coat of arms for the 5th Earl of Carlisle, 24.3cm dia., total weight approx. 196ozt (12)Provenance: Property from a UK private collection. Footnotes: Arms: The 5th Earl of Carlisle (impaling Leveson-Gower).Frederick Howard (1748-1825), Viscount Morpeth, was the youngest but only surviving son of the 4th Earl of Carlisle and his wife Isabella (nee Byron). He succeeded to his father's titles and estates in 1758 and, following study at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, was created a Knight of the Thistle in 1767 and a Privy Councillor in 1777 (the same year in which he became Treasurer of the Royal Household). He held many other government and official positions- including being one of the Commissioners to treat with America in 1778, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1780-1782 and Lord Privy Seal in 1783. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1801.In 1770 the Earl of Carlisle married Lady Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower, youngest daughter of the Duke of Bridgewater and the couple went on to have ten children.The Earl, however, is perhaps better known for his links to his cousins through his mother's side- the Byron family. In 1798 he was appointed guardian to Lord Byron, who later lampooned him in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, and the household at Castle Howard also often included Byron's half sister Augusta. (With thanks to Pursuivant Research)Condition Report: The plates are in good overall condition commensurate with age but there is general scratching, nicking and pitting noted to all. The scratching is visible to all plates and consistent with age and use. The gilding is later. Some wear to the engraved arms. Some wear to the gilding in places (including on borders and to undersides). Some dark marks to the front and reverse of some plates which have not come off with a light polish with cloth. Hallmarks clear. Variously numbered to reverse (Nos. 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 17, 27, 29, 56, 60) and engraved with scratch weights. One plate not numbered and with no scratch weight. Two silk top hats and a bowler hat in boxes. The first hat is stamped Christy’s London and MJ Parkhouse Ltd, it is in very good condition commensurate with age and wear. The second is stamped The Scotch House, Knightsbridge. It is in fair condition, the outer looks good but the inside needs attention.
