c.1956 CM 175cc Production Racing MotorcycleFrame no. CMA1286Engine no. SCM A1269CM was founded in Bologna in 1930 by rider/engineers Oreste Drusiani (whose son Alfonso would later find fame with Mondial) and Mario Cavedagna. Powered by overhead-valve and overhead-camshaft engines of various capacities up to 500cc, CM's motorcycles soon gained a reputation for both indestructibility and speed, its 'cammy' 350 ridden successfully by Guglielmo Sandri in the mid-1930s being particularly noteworthy. The company kept faith with the four-stroke engine in the immediately post-war years and then in 1949 introduced the first of a range of two-strokes, the ultimate expression of which was a 250cc twin. But the company was not yet done with four-stroke models, launching the overhead-cam Francolino 175 sports roadster in 1956. Belatedly climbing aboard the scooter bandwagon in 1958, the firm had ceased production by the decade's end. An older restoration by the Morbidelli Museum, now somewhat deteriorated, this two-stroke CM is presented in competizione specification typical of lightweight machines prepared for the long-distance road races of their day such as Milan-Taranto and the Moto Giro d'Italia. In this specification its top speed would have been in the region of 130-135km/h (80-84mph). 1956 Rumi 125cc FormichinoFrame no. 22351Engine no. 22191Rumi was founded in Bergamo, Italy at the beginning of the 20th Century. The company originally supplied components to the textile industry and during World War 2 produced miniature submarines and torpedoes. Headed by Donnino Rumi, it switched to motorcycle manufacture at the war's end, introducing its first Turismo model in 1950. This little gem was powered by what would become Rumi's trademark engine, a 125cc parallel twin two-stroke, the cylinders of which were inclined horizontally. It is for its motor scooters that Rumi is best remembered today, particularly the Formichino (Little Ant) and its derivatives, which were among the fastest scooters of their day. A masterpiece of scooter design, the Formichino arrived in 1954. Its rivals might have been designed with cheapness and simplicity in mind, but Donnino Rumi started from engineering first principles with the Formichino, using the engine as a stressed member of the chassis, which was made up from aluminium castings bolted together. Out of production since the company's closure in 1962, the Formichino is today one of the most highly sought-after of all scooters. Displaying zero kilometres on the odometer, this beautiful Formichino has not been used since its restoration by a specialist. There is no registration document with this Lot, which is offered with a photocopied instruction manual.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: NN If purchased by a UK resident, this machine is subject to a NOVA declaration, undertaken by Bonhams upon a successful sale, to facilitate the registration of the machine here in the UK.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Property of a deceased's estate1927 Raleigh 248cc Model 14Registration no. SV 4480Frame no. SABTVRO3663180216 (see text)Engine no. M8075Odometer reading: None fittedMoT expiry date: Unknown•Typical lightweight Raleigh of the Vintage era•Believed an older restoration•Requires re-commissioningBritain's best-known and longest-surviving bicycle maker, Raleigh also manufactured motorcycles from 1899 to 1905 and again from 1919 to 1933. More recently, the Nottingham company offered a range of mopeds plus a scooter in the late 1950s/1960s. During the 1920s Raleigh's line-up expanded to include machines of numerous different capacities, both sidevalve and overhead-valve engined, ranging from a 175cc unitary construction lightweight to a hefty 998cc v-twin for sidecar pulling. A typical example of a lightweight Raleigh of the Vintage era, the Model 14 was manufactured between 1925 and 1927 and was powered by a 248cc single-cylinder sidevalve engine driving via a three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox with chain final drive. There was no front brake; presumably it was considered that the machine's relatively modest performance rendered one unnecessary. The Model 14 would have set you back around £40 when new, depending on the ancillary equipment specified. Noteworthy features of this particular example include a P&H headlamp, a DEKLA bulb horn, and a brass plaque showing that it was supplied new by Woottens of Oxford. In 1993 the machine was issued with a DVLA frame number and given an age-related registration number, and it is likely that it was restored at around this time. (These DVLA 'SABTVRO' numbers are sometimes issued if it has not been possible to locate an original manufacturer's number.) The engine turns over but it is not known when 'SV 4480' last ran or its present mechanical condition. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Accompanying documentation consists of an old-style V5 document and the aforementioned correspondence.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 43/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. c.1958 Innocenti Lambretta 150LDRegistration no. RMW 146Frame no. *319456* 150LDEngine no. 150LD *328708Odometer reading: 4,579 miles – not warrantedMoT expiry date: Unknown *Highly Original*Potentially original mileage *Ideal for sympathetic restoration Manufactured by the Italian industrial giant Innocenti, the Lambretta scooter gained instant acceptance in the immediate post-war years, its cleanliness and convenience in particular appealing to those who regarded the true motorcycle with suspicion. In the UK, Italian scooters were adopted as favoured transport by the 'Mods', becoming one of the enduring style icons of the 1960s. Predecessor of the Li and TV series, the LD arrived in 125cc form in 1951 and became available with 150cc engine three years later. The LD 150's air-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine produced 6bhp (1.2bhp more than the 125) giving the model a top speed of around 50mph. LD production continued until the end of the 1950s. Believed to be original and unrestored, this LD150 displays 'Lambretta Conessionaire Ltd, Wimbledon' plaques throughout and is fitted with air-intake side panels. The machine turns over but does not fire into life. Accordingly, the machine is sold strictly as viewed requiring recommissioning or restoration to a greater or lesser extent. Offered without documents.
