* PETER HOWSON OBE, CEASEFIRE, 1992 oil on canvas signed 183cm x 132cm (72 x 52 inches) Unframed Provenance: Angela Flowers Gallery, London where acquired by the current vendor. Private London collection. Original purchase receipt accompanies this lot. Note: A rare and substantial work from the early 1990's, a time when Howson's work had started to attract critical acclaim from all over the art world. Peter Howson was sent to Bosnia in June 1993, the conflict had been escalating rapidly and a United Nations peacekeeping force, including a significant British presence, had been deployed to try and stem the horrific acts being perpetrated by both sides. It was decided that a pictorial and artistic record of the war should be made and with limited funding available from the Imperial War Museum the patronage of The Times newspaper enabled Howson to be commissioned as the official war artist in Bosnia. On his appointment The Times wrote that his 'often violent images and ability to invest ordinary men and women with heroic dignity' made him an obvious choice to chronicle the conflict. The most recent major example to be sold at auction from Howson's Bosnia series "Croatian And Muslim" (213 x 152.5cm oil on canvas) achieved £173,000 (inc buyers premium) as lot 209 Sotheby's.London 11th November 2016.

* Jim Gilbert [1933-1995]- Coming from School:-signed 'Convict G' bottom left inscribed on the stretcheroil on canvas75 x 60cm.* Biography. Jim Gilbert grew up in the East End of London and was dishonourably discharged from National Service aged 21. He was a big and powerful man who spent years in jail for crimes ranging from drug smuggling to robbery. Confined in the 1960s, he began painting as a form of therapy. Many of his figure paintings, with a strong resemblance to the work of Peter Howson, are in a sensitive, sombre, narrow palette and reflect, in a disturbed and isolated way, his early harsh life experiences. In 1972 he had his first show in Bath, received the Arthur Koestler Award for Prisoner Art and in 1973 was chosen by The Dylan Thomas Society to paint a portrait of the poet for presentation to US President Jimmy Carter. His later works of Morocco and Spain, where he died, are sensitive, calm and gentle watercolours.
