He was awarded the Bram Stoker gold medal and a Fulbright Scholarship. He studied at the Pratt Institute New York and his first solo show was held at the Barbara Toll Gallery, New York in 1983. His work appeared in exhibitions throughout the US and Europe with major museums acquiring his paintings. Along with Ken Currie, Peter Howson and Adrian Wiszniewski, Campbell was an important figure in the renaissance of Scottish art in the 1980's which saw Glasgow become one of the major international centres for contemporary art at that time with the emergence of the New Glasgow Boys. He is represented in many important private and public collections including Tate Modern London, Tate Liverpool, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, Arts Council of Great Britain, and Art Institute of Chicago.
