William Lionel Wyllie, R.A. (British, 1851-1931)The White Star liner Oceanic (II) lying at anchor and loading coal late at night ahead of an early departure the following morning indistinctly signed 'WLW...' (lower right)oil on canvas53.6 x 91.1cm (21 1/8 x 35 7/8in).Footnotes:The White Star Line inaugurated its North Atlantic passenger service in 1871 with a luxurious new steamer named Oceanic and, by the time she was retired in 1896, the contract to build her replacement had already gone to Harland & Wolff at Belfast where the new flagship was laid down in 1898. Launched on 14th January 1899, she was completed that August and cost a staggering £750,000. Registered at 17,274 tons gross (6,996 net) and measuring 705 feet in length with a 68 foot beam, she had accommodation for 410 first and 300 second class passengers and splendid public rooms as befitted White Star's reputation for luxury over speed. Nevertheless, she could still make 19½ knots at full steam and, although not a record-breaker, proved a worthy addition to the company's fleet.Leaving her builders' yard on 26th August (1899), she was thrown open to the Press when she arrived at Liverpool and sailed on her maiden voyage, bound for New York, on 6th September. After eight years during which, despite a few minor mishaps, she rendered her owners excellent service, her home port changed to Southampton (in 1907) and remained thus until the summer of 1914. Almost as soon as War was declared on 4th August, Oceanic was commissioned as an Armed Merchant Cruiser and was posted to the 10th Cruiser Squadron to help maintain the 'Northern Patrol'. Sadly, before ever she had 'fired a shot in anger', she ran aground off Foula Island, in the Shetlands, on 8th September and was eventually pronounced a total loss despite valiant attempts to save her over several weeks. In March 1924, at which time most of her still remained intact, she was gradually cut down to water level for salvage, and the last remnants of her hull were finally removed in the late 1970s.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The models were mainly made from the leftover beef bones on their plates. The prisoners were interned on de-rigged war ships, so-called Hulks, which were anchored off the south coast of England or in prisons such as Norman's Cross near Peterborough and Princetown in Devon. Prisoners were allowed to attend local markets to sell these wares and used the proceeds to supplement their meagre food rations. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Joseph Davey Cunningham, A History of the Sikhs, from the Origin of the Nation to the Battles of the Sutlej, the first (suppressed) edition John Murray, London, 1849425pp., two hand-coloured engraved maps, one folding, one folding genealogical tree of the Gurus, contemporary stamped leather 230 x 155 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceBookplate of Norah Lydall.Inscribed GSL, 8/10/38.Stamped Director: C. W. M. Gell, BA (Cantab.).J. D. Cunningham (1812-51) was, as the title page has it, 'Lieutenant of Engineers, and Captain in the Army of India'. In 1837 he was appointed assistant to Colonel Claude Wade, the political agent for the Sikhs, and held various positions in the Punjab until 1845. When the first Anglo-Sikh War began in December of that year he was attached to the staff of Sir Charles Napier and then to that of Sir Hugh Gough, Commander-in-chief in India. He was present at the battles of Buddawal (22 January 1846) and Aliwal (28 January 1846). At Sobraon (10 February 1846), he served as an additional aide-de-camp to the Governor-General, Sir Henry Hardinge. Later he was political agent to the state of Bhopal from 1846 to 1850.This first edition of A History of the Sikhs contains criticism of Hardinge's actions in the conduct of the Anglo-Sikh War and this led to Cunningham's dismissal from the political service. The second edition of the book was published in 1853 after Cunningham's death at the age of 38 (which was supposed to have been partially caused by this disgrace). This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
An engraved silver-plated brass casket Andalusia, probably 15th/ 16th Centuryof decagonal form, with lifting convex lid surmounted by a circular boss, on three compressed globular feet, engraved to the lid and each side with an interlace of split-palmettes overlaid with flowerheads on a hatched ground 27 cm. highFootnotes:ProvenanceFormerly in a private French Collection.Large polygonal boxes are not common in Islamic metalwork whilst decagonal boxes are rarer still. However, intriguing parallels with the shape of the present lot can be drawn with taracea boxes produced in Spain during the Nasrid period in the mid 14th Century which rest upon small globular feet. One example of such a pyxis is in the church of Villasandino near Burgos (see José Ferrandis Torres, Marfiles árabes de Occidente, Madrid 1935–40, vol.II, p.268, cat.170, pl.lxxxviii). Two large decagonal taracea boxes are known, one in a private London collection, and another in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (270-1895), which is dated to the first half of the 15th Century and has a similar diameter to the present lot. Parallel hatching became common in Andalusian metalwork in the 11th century AD. Metalworkers used a thin rectangular tool with five circular indents that, when punched into the surface of the metal, left a row of raised dots. The primary intention was to create a textured background of dots, but the rectangular tool led to a secondary effect of lines that were often parallel (see the study by Mirco Bassi in A. Contadini (ed.) The Pisa Griffin and the Mari-Cha Lion, Pisa, 2018; see also J. Raby's contribution to the same volume on the oil lamp from Montefrio and other related metalwork of the 11th century.) This form of rectangular stamp tool became less common in the 13th and 14th centuries, but by then parallel hatching for the background of metalwork was a well established aesthetic, and was produced by engraving as well as punching. It occurs, for example, on the lock plate of the Nasrid 13th or 14th Century ivory box in Zaragoza (see J.D. Dodds (ed.), Al-Andalus, The Art of Islamic Spain, New York, 1992, pp. 266-267, cat. no. 52). ), and its influence even extended to late 13th Century ceramics from Murcia (ibid, cat. 107). It also occurs in some of the roundels on one of the finest examples of Nasrid metalwork, the bucket in the Museo Arqueologico Nacional in Madrid, attributed to the second half of the 14th century (ibid, cat. 59). Another example is the Nasrid silvered and gilded copper pyxis sold at Sotheby's (Arts of the Islamic World, 8 October 2014, lot 92).The tradition of using rectangular punches to create a textured background spread to Christian silversmithing in Spain and continued well after the Reconquista. Yet, even where punches were not used, the use of engraved parallel hatching was widespread and long-lasting in Spain, as for example on a ciborium made in Saragossa in 1573 offered at Christie's, Five Private Collections, 5-19 July 2022, lot 211.In summary, the decagonal shape and size of the present lot relate to wooden boxes from 15th Century Nasrid Andalusia, some earlier examples of which rested on small oblate feet. The rather loose scrollwork has parallels in Nasrid and Mudéjar work, though it is arguably more florid, and the use of dense parallel hatching as a ground for the scrolls is an argument in favour of an Andalusian origin. As there are no metal counterparts yet known, it cannot be placed in a developmental sequence, which makes it difficult to date precisely, though a range from perhaps 1450-1550 seems probable. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: †† VAT at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Hafiz, Divan, copied for a Safavid provincial governor (Amir al-Umara', Commander of Commanders), and with a note by the poet Vaqar, son of the Qajar calligrapher Vesal, attributing the manuscript to Mir 'Imad Persia, Isfahan, dated the middle of Sha'ban 1009/February 1601Persian manuscript on gold-sprinkled paper, 223 leaves, 11-12 lines to the page written in fine nasta'liq script in black ink in two columns, intercolumnar rules in gold, inner margins ruled in gold and red, gold-outlined panel left blank for headings, one illuminated headpiece in colours and gold, remargined at a later date, endleaf with copious notes and seal impressions, 19th Century brown limp leather binding (perhaps Indian), blind-embossed with floral decoration and central calligraphic panel in nasta'liq script on front and back covers 274 x 175 mm.Footnotes:The title Amir al-Umara' was generally used for provincial governors during the Safavid period. His name is unknown, as is that of the scribe, since the leaf following the last is now missing. On the rear flyleaf there are various notes by later owners. The most prominent is that written by Vaqar, a poet (d. 1872), who purchased the manuscript. The son of Vesal (the great Qajar calligrapher), he observes that the scribe of the manuscript can be shown to be Mir 'Imad, even though there are some differences compared with some of his other work. He then observes that this attribution has been confirmed by his brother Davari, another poet and also a calligrapher himself (d. 1867). He notes that studying the hands of the great calligraphers is the best method of instruction.Other notes are written by a certain Muhammad Husain, dated Dhu'l-Qada 1291/December-January 1873; and a note of friendship from Jalal al-Din Mirza, son of Shahrukh Mirza, Governor of Qomsheh, to a certain Khwaja Aqa, dated 5th Rajab 1292/5th August 1875. A calligrapher named Sanglakh purchased the manuscript in AH 1297/AD 1879-80 as he was leaving for Karbala. Lastly, an owner whose seal impression has been erased purchased it in Azar 1333/November-December 1954 from the collection of the deceased Amir Mofakham Bakhtiari. The main panel of the binding contains Persian couplets, two by an unidentified poet and two from a ghazal of Hafiz. The smaller panel to one side has a Persian couplet (often used at the end of colophons) asking the reader for a prayer (perhaps for the maker) and ending with the date AH 1252/AD 1836-37.Important Notice to BuyersSome countries e.g., the US, prohibit or restrict the purchase by its citizens (wherever located) and/or the import of certain types of Iranian-origin works. A page from the Nasr al-Din Shah Album, with a painting by a Persian artist working in the manner of Muhammad Zaman, after a European print depicting the Holy Family Persia, the painting late 17th Century, the album page circa 1888gouache on paper, laid down on an illuminated page with gold-sprinkled inner border, outer border with polychrome and gold decoupage flowers, cartouches and palmettes on an orange ground painting 247 x 192 mm.; album page 435 x 286 mm.Footnotes:The distinctive borders of this page originate from the now-dispersed album made in 1888 for Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar (reg .1848-96), probably to mark the fortieth anniversary of his accession to the throne. The dedication page, with large bold nasta'liq inscription, was sold at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 26th April 2012, lot 219. The page facing this, the centre with a stylised decoupage floral composition, appeared at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 1st April 2021, lot 33. The practice of laying down earlier paintings (mostly Safavid miniatures) on album pages with finely-illuminated borders was a common practice in the Qajar period, and it seems that our page (as well as some of those from the Nasr al-Din Shah Album offered at auction) exemplify this practice. For examples and discussion, see G. Fellinger (ed.), L'Empire des Roses: chef-d'oeuvres de l'art persan du XIXe siecle, Lens 2018, pp. 68-71, nos. 62, 63 and 64.Other folios from the Album illustrate this, and of particular relevance for our page, some are European-influenced and/or of Christian subject-matter, including one of four lots sold at Christie's (Islamic Art and Manuscripts, 10th October 2000, lots 88, 89, 90 and 91). Lot 90 included one page with an illustration described as 'the Blessed Virgin' (no illustration available), and three with scenes from the life of Christ. One (depicting a man with hunting dogs) was inscribed ya sahib al-zaman, indicating that someone at least saw a connection with Muhammad Zaman's work, however fanciful. A page from the Album (Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 9th October 2013, lot 5), had a 16th Century Shahnama illustration in the centre).Other examples of pages from the Album included a large section comprising 27 folios (Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 6th October 2011, lot 265); and six bifolia, all with calligraphic compositions, Christie's, 21st April 2016, lots 130-135.Muhammad ZamanMuhammad Zaman (d. circa 1700) was one of the first Safavid court painters to imitate European painting styles and perspective. Little is known of his life, but he worked at the court of Shah 'Abbas II (reg.1642-66). Works attributed to him include miniatures added and restored in Shah Tahmasp I's copy of Nizami's Khamsa (British Library inv. Or.2265). On the strength of these royal commissions it can be assumed that Muhammad Zaman was at some point attached to the Royal atelier or kitabkhaneh (see A. Ivanov, Persian Miniatures, in E. Kostioukovitch (ed.), The St. Petersburg Muraqqa', Milan 1996, p. 35). European painting and prints circulated widely in 17th Century Persia (see A. Welch, Shah Abbas & the Arts of Isfahan, New York 1973, p. 148). A miniature by Muhammad Zaman of a biblical scene in the Fogg Art Museum (inv. 1966.6), dated AH 1100/1689 AD, depicts the Return from the Flight to Egypt (Welch, op. cit. pl. 72, p. 108). The origin of that miniature has been traced to a mid-17th Century engraving by the Flemish artist Lucas Vosterman, though based on an original painting by Rubens, (Welch, p. 117). The painting in our page is an almost exact copy of an engraving of 1646 by Pierre Daret, depicting the Holy Family, with Joseph on the left holding a book, and on the right the Christ Child seated in the Virgin's lap, after the French painting Simon Vouet (see an example in the British Museum (1841,1211.39.16).Examples of works attributed to Muhammad Zaman are few, and often have Christian subjects.A painting of the Madonna and Child after a European model, signed by the artist and dated AH 1093/AD 1682-83, sold at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 7th April 2011, lot 261.Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 20th April 2016, lot 45, signed and dated AH 1087/AD 1676-77, depicting Shaykh San'an and the Christian woman.Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 1st April 2021, lot 20: depicting the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, with inscriptions, the name Muhammad Zaman, and the date AH 1076/AD 1665-66, described as 'by or in the mode of Muhammad Zaman'.A number of paintings by Muhammad Zaman were recently exhibited at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, at the exhibition Pearls on a String: Artists, Patrons, and Poets at the Great Islamic Courts, and the subject of an essay in the accompanying catalogue by Amy Landau entitled 'Man, Mode, and Myth' (see Landau (ed.) 2015, pp. 157-194). George Sheridan (1923-2008) was one of the founding members of the artistic community of Deià in the Balearic island of Mallorca, among such illustrious residents as the poet Robert Graves. His painting style reflects the colour and rugged beauty of his adopted home in Spain, having spent many years working as an artist in London and Paris after leaving his native America. His influences included the art of India and the Himalayas, which he collected avidly and whose themes he incorporated into his work. He frequented Spink and Son whenever he was in London, becoming close friends with the legendary head of the Indian and Southeast Asian department, Anthony Gardiner, from whom he bought regularly. When in Paris he would buy from the leading dealers of the day, Jean-Claude Moreau-Gobard and Josette Schulmann. His eye for Asian art extended from the Buddhist sculpture of Gandhara, Nepal and Tibet, through classical Indian sculpture to the magical world of Indian miniatures.Having come to power in the mid-ninth century in the Tanjore District, Tamil Nadu, the Cholas built an empire that dominated the region and became the locus for great strides in bronze casting, resulting in elegant figures that balanced idealised forms with naturalistic modelling (see P. Pratapaditya, Indian Sculpture, Volume 2, Los Angeles, 1998, p. 230). The present lot demonstrates these elegant forms, depicting Shiva as Chandrashekhara, 'Lord of the crescent moon', a connection forged by their shared symbolism of fertility and healing. A sculpture of Shiva Chandrashekhara dated to the 10th Century is in the Brooklyn Museum, New York, acc. no. 2007.2. Another example also featuring Parvati and dated to the 13th Century can be seen in P.
