Property of an American collector; acquired 1980-2000. Cf. Thunmark-Nylén, L. Die Wikingerzeit Gotlands I.: Abbildungen der Graubfunde, Stockholm, 1992, plate 282, item 6. Fine condition.
11th-13th century AD. A hand-forged iron axehead with triangular-section narrow blade extending to a narrow curved edge, socket with lateral flanges and slightly domed hammer extension to the rear. 327 grams, 17cm (6 3/4"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972. For similar see Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, plate 14, item 10. Very fine condition.
9th-12th century AD. A miniature bronze mallet with rectangular head, ribbed shaft and loop finial. 4.73 grams, 22mm (1"). Property of an American collector; acquired 1980-2000. 7th-10th century AD. A silver pendant in the form of a broad axe with suspension lug and silver ring. 1.33 grams, 20mm (3/4"). Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1990s. Cf. Griciuviene, E. Seliai. The Selonians, Vilnius, 2007, item 591. Amulets such as these are possibly related to the Mjolnir, or Thor's Hammer pendants, that were popular in the Viking period. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
9th-12th century AD. A miniature silver mallet with rectangular head and curved outer face with incised transverse lines, ribbed shaft and loop finial. 1.43 grams, 18mm (3/4"). Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1990s. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, plate 104, item 2. The hammer, Mjölnir, was the magical weapon of the god Thor. The classic representation is short-handled with a pentagonal head. The present piece resembles the tool used in metalworking with one broad striking face and one narrow. The style of hammer with twisted handle is similar to one found at Romersdal, Bornholm, Denmark. For a discussion on the wearing of amulets in the form of model weapons and other instruments see Meaney, A. Anglo Saxon Amulets and Curing Stones BAR British Series 96, 1981. p 149 - 168. [No Reserve] Very fine condition.
16th-17th century AD. A mixed group of lead plaques comprising: a discoid pendant with square loop, central boss with concentric rows of pellets, crowned profile bust to the reverse; a similar plaque without a loop, pierced at the centre; a flat-section ovoid plaque with roughly incised outline figure in robes and mitre with surrounding legend in a border '+SIGILLVM SIMONIS EPISCOPI DECONI' (seal of Simon, the bishop's deacon) and similar text and border to the reverse partly obliterated. 219 grams total, 40-85mm (1 1/2 - 3 1/2"). Found County Durham, UK, in the 1980s. Accompanied by typed and signed letter from John Cherry, Deputy Keeper of Medieval and Later Antiquities at the British Museum discussing the text, and summary discussion by Denis Coggins (August, 2003"). The thick (2.75 - 4.5mm) lead plaque bears a clearly executed but enigmatic text. The plaque is too large and too poorly made to have served as a seal. It seems likely that the plaque was a test-piece on which a design was tried out informally for the arrangement of the design elements, before the craftsman committed to the final form for the mould from which to cast the bronze seal matrix. The hammer marks to one face imply that the design was abandoned and the plaque re-used as a convenient lead pad before it was lost or discarded. [No Reserve] Fine condition, pierced disc cracked.
Neolithic, 5th-2nd millennium BC. A very well formed ceremonial axe-hammer in a fine-grained pale brown serpentine material showing layers at the sides; with slightly convex cutting edge and waisted taper to oval and domed hammerhead face, with central piercing for hafting. 345 grams, 12.3cm (5"). Property of an Essex gentleman; formerly in a private collection, acquired by descent 1970s. The material from which this axe-hammer is made is not suitable for use as an implement, being quite soft and liable to splitting on the original geological sediment planes and it was thus most probably made for ceremonial rather than practical use; the lack of any usage wear evidence is also suggestive of this. Extremely fine condition. Rare.
Neolithic, 5th-2nd millennium BC. A pecked and ground axe-hammer with central perforation for hafting, well polished surfaces with sharp blade. 376 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Property of an Essex gentleman; formerly in a private collection, acquired by descent 1970s. Cf. Evans, Sir John, The Ancient Stone Implements Weapons and Ornaments of Great Britain, London, 1897, fig.131. Extremely fine condition.
