An embroidered Chinese Cap, circa 1900, hand-stitched cube-shaped cap, with scallop-edged flaps on each side and 2 long pointed pendants at rear, elaborately embroidered overall, side flaps with mitre and crosier on opposing sides surmounted by a blue bird and flanked by flower stems, some threads a little loose at corners, lower edge of cap with willow trees, butterflies, flower stems, mountains, and dwellings, extreme edge beginning to fray in places, pendants depicting the Arma Christi, i.e. the Cross, whip, dice, hammer, pincers, nails, lance, sponge, chalice, and cockerel, intermingled with butterflies, hand-worked in polychrome silks and gold metallic threads, using satin stitch, stem stitch, and couching, on a black silk satin ground, flaps lined with puce silk, and pendants with a figured blue lining, cap approximately 16 x 16cm, pendant length 102cmQty: (1)NOTESThis type of headgear was worn by all clergy in China, both missionaries and the indigenous clerics, along with other liturgical vestments.
