Delphine tummeln sich im Meer auf dem von Norbertine Bresslern-Roth ausgeführten Ölgemälde. Sie ziehen an den Trümmern eines untergehenden Bootes vorbei. Eine Besatzung ist nicht zu sehen, doch die hölzernen Bruchstücke lassen darauf schließen, dass das Boot in Seenot geraten ist. Links oben sind noch schemenhaft dunkle Gewitterwolken zu erkennen. Der Regen ergießt sich dort über den Ozean. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite hat sich das Wetter bereits beruhigt. Dazwischen ragt eine Insel aus dem Wasser, kräftige Sonnenstrahlen tauchen sie in eine gelbe Farbskala. Räumlich nimmt diese Insel wenig Platz ein. Doch die Erwähnung im Titel und die Akzentuierung durch das gleißende Sonnenlicht, das fast auf sakrale Weise in gelber Kontrastfarbe zur blaugrauen Farbskala des Unwetters und des Wassers steht, weisen auf ihre Bedeutung hin. So wirkt der springende Delphin wie eine Glorie um das rettende Eiland – denn genau das wird hier suggeriert. Sie ist das rettende Ufer für die Schiffbrüchigen, die sonst der Gewalt des Meeres ausgesetzt sind. Erzählt wird also von der Übermacht der Natur gegenüber dem Menschen – doch auch Glück und Hoffnung spielen eine Rolle. Die Delphine selbst können als Hoffnungsträger interpretiert werden, gelten sie doch in ihrer ikonographischen Bedeutung als Begleiter der Seeleute und Retter der Schiffbrüchigen. Für ihre spielerische Schnelligkeit sind sie bekannt, mit der sie durch die Wellen gleiten. Diesen charakteristischen Wesenszug dokumentiert Bresslern-Roth indem sie die unterschiedlichen Stadien des Sprunges festhält. Wie in einer Zeitfolge sind die vier großen Delphine im Vordergrund angeordnet. Während einer der Delphine nur mit dem Kopf aus dem Wasser dargestellt ist, hat sich der nächste schon fast mit dem gesamten Körper aus dem Wasser erhoben. Damit erinnern sie an die Fotoaufnahmen von den Bewegungsabläufen eines galoppierenden Pferdes, "The Horse in Motion". Sie stammen von Eadweard Muybridge aus dem Jahre 1878. Er wurde dadurch zum Pionier der Chronofotografie und lieferte wichtige Impulse für die Entwicklung des Filmes. Die gleiche Idee verwendete Bresslern-Roth um alle Stadien der tierischen Bewegung darzustellen, nur dass sie dafür die Ölmalerei verwendete anstatt fotografische Aufnahmen. Sie sah darin vermutlich die Möglichkeit, das Tier und dessen Bewegungsapparat in mehreren Facetten zu zeigen. Bereits in ihrer Studienzeit in Wien bei Ferdinand Schmutzer nutzte sie ihre freie Zeit um in den Tierpark zu gehen und dort Studien vor dem lebenden Modell zu machen. Auch nach ihrem Studium, als sie in ihre Geburtsstadt Graz zurückgekehrt war, besuchte sie immer wieder Tiergärten um ihre Vorlagensammlung zu erweitern. In Gemälden wie "Die Insel" ließ sie ihre Beobachtungen einfließen und stellt ihre narrative Erzählweise gekonnt unter Beweis.(Petra Hammer-Maier)

Historische Feuerwaffen - Erlaubnispflichtige Waffen : Scheibenpistole im Kaliber 4,5 mm RF von F. D CLAUDIN Brevete Paris um 1860-70.Frühe Scheibenpistole mit direktem Hahnschloss von Claudin um 1860-70. Gebläuter, mit Blüten und Rankenwerk am Laufansatz und Mündungsseitig. Achtkantig gehaltener Lauf mit eingeschobenem Perlkorn und Kimme. Der Lauf ist im vorderen Teil, in breiten Aussparungen kanneliert, welches im rückwertigen Teil nur noch schwächer ausgeführt ist. Auf der Laufoberseite befindet sich folgende Signatur F.D Claudin Brevete a Paris. Der Hahnsporn mit Fortsatz zeigt feine eingeschnittene Ziselierungen auf, die dem Hahn umgebene Schwanzschraube zeigt fein und erhaben geschnittene Reben mit Weintrauben. Das Abzugsblech ziert ebenfalls ein schwungvoll gehaltenes Abzugsblech, auch am Abzugsbügel, der mit Fingerhaken zum Knauf hin auslaufende Teil, mit Weinreben mit Trauben. Der einfach gehaltene kurze Schaft weist im vorderen Abschluss sowie beidseitig am Kolben tief geschnittenes Rankenwerk auf. Der Kolbenabschluss bildet ein pagodenförmiger Knauf mit turmartigem Abschluss. Der dachförmige Teil ist mit Weinblättern reichlich verziert. Die Waffe befindet sich im dazugehörigen, neuwertig erhaltenem Koffer, welche mit grünem Filz ausgeschlagen ist und wie folgt beschrieben ist: F.D CLAUDIN B. TE PARIS. Im Kasten anbei befindet sich eine leere Hornbüchse sowie ein metallenes Ölfläschchen sowie ein Patronenfach für Patronen mit dazugehöriger Schachtel Munition sowie ein Putzstock und ein Entladestock. Octagonal barrel with inserted bead front sight and rear sight. The barrel is fluted in the front part, in wide recesses, which are only more weakly executed in the rear part. On the top of the barrel is the following signature F.D Claudin Brevete a Paris. The hammer spur with appendix shows fine incised chasing, the tail screw surrounding the hammer shows fine and raised cut vines with grapes. The trigger plate is also adorned with a sweeping trigger plate, also on the trigger guard, the part ending with finger hooks to the pommel, with vines with grapes. The simple short stock has deeply cut vine work in the front end and on both sides of the butt. The butt end is formed by a pagoda-shaped pommel with a tower-like finial. The roof-shaped part is richly decorated with vine leaves. The gun comes in a case in mint condition, which is lined with green felt and marked as follows: F.D CLAUDIN B. TE PARIS. In the case there is an empty horn rifle and a metal oil bottle as well as a chamber for cartridges with a box of ammunition, a cleaning rod and an unloading rod. Erlaubnisfreie Waffen - Steinschloß : Gezogenes Zündpillen Scheiben- bzw. Duellpistolen - Paar von Joseph Contriner Wien um 1840 im KaliberElegantes Scheiben- bzw. Duellpistolen ? Paar von Joseph Contriner mit deutschem Stecher und gezogenem Lauf im Stil des Empire. Die Schlosspartie mit Arabesken verziertem Hahn. Durch das Spannen des Hahnes selbstständig verschließbares Behältnis zur Aufnahme und Zündung der Zündpille auf der Schlossplatte. Hierbei ist zu bemerken, dass durch den vorderen gefederten Deckel mehrere Zündpillen magaziniert werden konnten. Die Schlossplatte selbst ist mit in Eisen geschnittenen Kriegstrophäen versehen. Die auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite angebrachte Halterung der Schlossplatte bilden zwei Schrauben, welche mit in Eisen geschnittenem Blattwerk umgeben sind. Der brünierte achtkantige zur Mündung hin konisch gehaltene Lauf weist eine in die Länge gezogene gestauchte Mündungspartie mit eingeschobenem Korn auf. Der Lauf trägt auf der Oberseite die Beschriftung "Joseph Contriner IN WIEN". Die relativ weit in die Schlosspartie reichende Schwanzschraube ist kantig rechteckig ausgeführt, zum Lauf hin seitlich angefasst und trägt auf der Oberseite in Gold eingelegt die Meistermarke als Medaillon von Contriner umgeben von gravierter Zierte. Im Weiteren trägt die Schwanzschraube eine Standkimme sowie zusätzlich dahinter eine etwas höhere klapp- und versenkbare Kimme sowie die Nr. 1 und 2 in geschwungener Form. Zusätzlich ist die Schwanzschraube dezent mit teils erhabenem Blattwerk verziert. Das Abzugsblech im Stil des Empire ist zur Mündung hin Vasenförmig mit auseinanderfallender Blütenzier ausgestaltet und reicht in einfacher Formgebung weit in den Kolbenhals. Der Abzugsbügel ist von eckiger Form mit abgerundeten Ecken und Fingerhaken und in diesem Bereich breiter ausgeführt mit einfacher Verzierung. Die Pistolen sind mit regulierbarem deutschem Stecher ausgestattet. Der Schaft aus Nussbaumholz ist zur Mündung hin kurz ausgeführt. Der Kolben ist sowohl mit einem kleinen wappenartigen Daumenblech sowie geschnittener Fischhaut versehen. Den auslaufenden Kolbenrücken ziert hervorgehobenes Blattmuster. Den ovalen Abschluss des Kolbens aus edlem Nussbaumholz ziert rautenförmig geschnittene Fischhaut. In addition, the tang is discreetly decorated with partly raised foliage. The Empire-style trigger plate is vase-shaped towards the muzzle with diverging floral decoration and extends far into the neck of the butt in a simple design. The trigger guard is of square shape with rounded corners and finger hooks and is wider in this area with simple decoration. The pistols are equipped with adjustable German set trigger. Steinschlosspistolen - Paar von Berselli in Rom, welches aufgrund seiner Visierung und Lauflänge von ca. 42 cm als Scheibenwaffe ausgelegt ist, mit außergewöhnlicher Ladevorrichtung. Die Schlossplatte welche vom Kolben ausgehend über das Schwanzschraubengehäuse reicht trägt eine aufgesetzte geschlossene Batterie. Der Hahndeckel öffnet sich beim Vorschellen des im Stil des Barock gehaltenen Hahnes. Die Schlossplatte selbst, wie die darauf befindlichen Anbausteile (Hahn, geschlossene Batterie mit Batterie und verdeckter Pfanne) sind schauseitig mit fein geschnittenem Rankenwerk verziert. Gehalten wird die Schlossplatte im Bereich des Kolbens von einer gegenüberliegenden Schraube welche mit einem in Eisen geschnittenem Blatt unterlegt ist, sowie von Stiften welche in das Schwanzschraubengehäuse reichen. Das Schwanzschraubengehäuse, in welches der Lauf eingeschraubt ist, besitzt eine drehbar gelagerte Trommel aus Messing welche auf der von der Schlossplatte abgewandten Seite mittels einer turmartig aufgeschraubten eisernen Platte, die mit einem Hebel verbunden ist, gehalten und gesteuert wird. Auf der Schlossplattenseite begrenzt eine auf die Trommel aufgeschraubte Platte den Radius der Trommel so, dass die in der Trommel eingebrachte Bohrung zur Aufnahme der Ladung einmal mit der Ladebohrung an der Unterseite des Schwanzschraubengehäuses und nach Schwenken der Trommel mit dem auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite angebrachten Hebel vor dem hinteren Laufende zu liegen kommt. Die Trommel ist auf der Schlossplattenseite mit der Signatur Giacomo Berselli versehen. Der in das Schwanzschraubengehäuse eingeschraubte leicht konisch gehaltene Lauf geht von achtkantig in rund über und weistals Verzierung neben feinem Eisenschnitt am Ansatz drei doppelt geführte Einschnürungen auf. Markant ist das auf den Lauf geschobene, hoch aufragende massive Korn. Die Visierung besteht aus dem bereits genannten Korn und breit ausgeschnittener V ? förmiger Kimme auf dem Gehäuse. Der Abzugsbügel ist formschön, dezent ausgeführt mit eingeschnittener Blüte und Ranke. Er reicht weit in den Kolbenhals. Das Gehäuse bildet zugleich die Abzugsplatte wobei technisch bedingt der Abzug seitlich versetzt ist. Das Gehäuse ist mit feinen eingeschnittenen Arabesken verziert. Konstruktionsbedingt besteht der aus Nussbaumholz gearbeitete Schaft aus Vorderschaft mit dezent erhabenen Ranken an den Seiten und einem separaten Kolben, welcher beidseitig im Bereich der Schlossplatte und der auslaufenden Schwanzschraube erhaben ausgeführt ist. Die langen, mit Muster versehenen Federn sind von dem dezent gehaltenen eisernen Knaufabschluss, welcher als Abschluss eine plastisch erhabene, mit Lorbeer bekrönte Büste im Medaillon aufweist, getrennt. Der hölzerne Ladestock mit halbrunder Metallkappe wird einmal von einer geschnürten Hülse und dem hülsenförmig, gestaltetem, geschnürtem Einschub gehalten, welcher noch weiter spitz zulaufend in den Vorderschaft reicht. Scheibenpistolenpaar von Giacomo Berselli Roma um 1700 im Kaliber 12mm Very nice, almost mint condition, breech-loading flintlock pistol pair from Berselli in Rome, which is designed as a target weapon due to its sights and barrel length of approx. 42 cm, with exceptional loading device. The lock plate which extends from the butt over the tail screw housing carries an attached closed battery. The hammer cover opens when the baroque style hammer is cocked. The lock plate itself, as well as the attachments on it (cock, closed battery with battery and covered pan) are decorated on the outside with finely cut vine work. The lockplate is held in the area of the butt by an opposite screw which is underlaid with a leaf cut in iron, as well as by pins which reach into the tail screw housing. The tail screw housing, into which the barrel is screwed, has a rotating brass drum which is held and controlled on the side facing away from the lock plate by means of an iron plate screwed on like a turret and connected to a lever. On the lock plate side, a plate screwed onto the drum limits the radius of the drum in such a way that the hole made in the drum for receiving the load comes to rest once with the loading hole on the underside of the tail screw housing and after pivoting the drum with the lever attached on the opposite side in front of the rear running end. The drum is signed Giacomo Berselli on the lockplate side. The slightly tapered barrel, which is screwed into the tang, changes from octagonal to round and has three double constrictions as decoration in addition to a fine iron cut at the base. The massive front sight, which is pushed onto the barrel, is a striking feature. The sights consist of the aforementioned front sight and a wide V-shaped rear sight on the housing. The trigger guard is nicely shaped, discreetly executed with incised flower and vine. It reaches far into the butt neck. The housing also forms the trigger plate, although for technical reasons the trigger is offset to the side. The case is decorated with fine incised arabesques. By design, the walnut stock consists of a forend with discreetly raised tendrils on the sides and a separate butt, which is raised on both sides in the area of the lockplate and the tailscrew. The long, patterned quills are separated from the discreetly held iron pommel finial, which features a sculpted raised bust crowned with laurel in a medallion as the finial. The wooden ramrod with semi-circular metal cap is held once by a laced sleeve and the sleeve-shaped, laced insert, which extends even further tapering into the forearm. A very beautifully preserved, technically highly interesting, exceptional pair of pistols from around 1700 in masterly quality.

Schon um 1892 zeigten sich erste Anzeichen rheumatoider Arthritis, die Renoir zu mehreren Kuraufenthalten bewegten. 1907 zog er dann nach Cagnes-sur-Mer bei Nizza, in sein Landhaus Les Collettes, wo viele Gemälde entstanden, obwohl er dann bereits an den Rollstuhl gefesselt war.
