Vale Press.- Campion (Thomas) Fifty Songs, edited by John Gray, [one of 210 copies], wood-engraved violet border and ornamental initials by Charles Ricketts, some very light offsetting, bound in repoussé tan morocco, gilt, for the Marchioness of Londonderry, by the Chiswick Art Guild, and with her bookplate, upper cover with title in gilt within a design of oak leaves in relief against a background of small gilt dots, lower cover with central coronet and initials "T.L." of the Marchioness and corner-pieces of repoussé oak leaves and gilt dots, spine ruled in compartments with five raised bands, top edge stained green and with small gilt stars, others uncut, pink striped moiré silk endpapers, signed at foot of rear turn-in, spine very slightly faded, [Watry B7], 8vo, [Vale Press], 1896.⁂ "The women binders of the Chiswick Art Workers Guild, the commercial side of the Chiswick School of Arts and Crafts, produced a distinctive style of modelled binding in Nigerian goatskin...The Chiswick modelled binding designs, which date from about 1896, have a Spanish or Italian flavour, reflecting the style of other leatherwork taught at the School...The women at Chiswick sent their bindings to be sold by Karslake, and so, from 1898, they bear the signature of the Guild of Women Binders, rather than that of the Chiswick Art Guild." A GERMAN ZISCHÄGGE, MID-17TH CENTURY with hemispherical one-piece skull embossed with six radiating ribs, fitted at its apex with a transversely-pierced finial and circular washer, at the brow with a flat ogival peak struck at the front with an unidentified maker's mark and the letter "L" and pierced at the rear with a rectangular hole to accommodate a sliding nasal-bar struck at its leaf-shaped upper end with the letters "h" over "h", and secured at the brow by a rectangular staple and locking-screw, fitted at the nape with a slightly flaring, obtusely-pointed neck-guard of four upward-overlapping lames, and at each side with a pendent scutiform cheek-piece pierced at its centre with seven circular auditory holes in rosette-formation, the main edges of the helmet formed with plain inward turns and the surface showing the remains of a black-from-the-hammer finish now cleaned bright and lightly patinated overall 26.5 cm; 10½in high Provenance A former convent, Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, later the home of the French literary historian and critic Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve (1804 - 1869). According to the vendor this was found in the attic in the mid-20th century, probably part of a 19th century decoration.
