A .50 (RIMFIRE) PALMER PATENT BOLT-ACTION CAVALRY CARBINE by E.G. Lamson & Co., Windsor, VT, dated '1865', with 20in. blued sighted barrel marked 'W. Palmer / Patent / Dec. 22, 1863.' at the breech, blued signed and dated lock, walnut half-stock (some cracks and repairs), blued iron mounts including single barrel band, and saddle-bar with suspension ring (iron parts re-coloured). Footnote: The Palmer has the distinction of being the first bolt-action metallic cartridge arm accepted for U.S. issue. The bolt operates on an interrupted thread and the hammer directly strikes the rim of the cartridge. Due to the Government changing the calibre to the new .50 Spencer cartridge from .44 rimfire the contract was delayed and subsequently not delivered until after the end of hostilities. It is thought that approximately 1,000 carbines were produced at a cost of $20.50 each.

PURDEY & SONS - A VERY RARE PAIR OF 12-BORE HAMMER / HAMMERLESS ROUND-BODIED SIDELOCK NON-EJECTORS, serial no. 10528 / 9, 30in. nitro replacement barrels (by another in 1971), 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, fences finely relief engraved with vine leaves, rounded-bars, sidelocks with dummy hammers of hare's-ear form and lateral stops (some screws replaced), best bouquet and scroll engraving, no safety catches, 14 3/8in. highly-figured stocks (cracks to horns gun no.1) including 3/4in. bakelite extensions, weight 6lbs. 14oz., in a brass-cornered oak and leather case. The maker's have kindly confirmed that the guns were completed in 1879. The specifications listed are 'a pair of 12-bores with 30" barrels, weighing 6lbs. 10oz. Solid bar hammerless action, front of action not shaped up to the locks but all rounded off to feel like a back action'. The maker's also state that approximately 20 examples of this type of gun were made between 1878 and 1881. It is suggested that the dummy hammers were an addition to the guns to give them a familiar feel and sighting plane to someone used to shooting with a hammergun.

* A good DB 20 bore top lever hammer gun by Holland & Holland, number 6424 (c 1878), 44" overall, twist barrels 28" with London black powder proofs, numbered 2 of a pair, scroll engraved back action locks with rebounding hammers, scroll engraved frame and trigger guard, walnut stock with chequered fore end retained by wedge, and chequered pistol grip with horn cap, the escutcheon engraved with crest and initials "PYG". GWO & C, the barrels retaining much original browned finish beneath dark patina (fore end cap missing), with London proof house exemption from proof certificate. Not illustrated owing to being at the Proof House at the time
