A Joseph Lang & Sons 12 bore shotgun, double barrel, side by side, hammer action, side lock, non-ejector, with engraved metal work and figured walnut stock, 30" Damascus barrels, Serial No. 4094, together with mahogany and brass disc handled motor case in the Purdey style, cleaning rods, etc (REQUIRES PRODUCTION OF A CURRENT SHOTGUN/RFD LICENCE PRIOR TO RELEASE FROM THE AUCTION ROOMS) CONDITION REPORTS (REQUIRES PRODUCTION OF A CURRENT SHOTGUN/RFD LICENCE PRIOR TO RELEASE FROM THE AUCTION ROOMS)Right barrel in proof. Left barrel in proof though with some dents. Right trigger OK. Left trigger OK. Safety working. Joints OK. No ejectors. Minimum wall .022 therefore fairly thin, whilst in proof. Metalwork with some surface scratching conducive with age and use. One particular scratch to the left barrel underside. See image. Some discolouration to the metal throughout. Some surface rust to the metal work around the trigger and trigger guard. Woodwork basically sound though with some surface denting and scratching, again conducive with age and use though nicely figured. Case, whilst basically sound, with large crack across the grain from one side to the other and smaller crack nearer the hinge side of the top edge, again pretty much all the way across. Key escutcheon missing. See images for further detail. (It appears that this gun is a very early credited example of James Lang's treble grip snap action, as outlined in his Patent No. 687 of 1870. The relief engraving of the circular pivot under the action was changed swiftly to a normal incised engraving style. This information has been received by the auctioneers post cataloguing by expert in this field Robert Hodges Esq. to whom we are extremely grateful. His book "Joseph Lang, His Sons, and Their Guns" is due for publication in 2024).
