* HERBERT WHONE (BRITISH 1925 - 2011), TENEMENT LIFE oil on canvas, signed and dated 1962 51cm x 66cm Framed Note: A stunning example of Herbert Whone's Glasgow. Herbert Whone was born in Bingley, West Yorkshire, where his parents were both employed in the cloth mills. He was encouraged by his mother to ''improve'' himself culturally, and from an early age took photographs and practised the violin. After education at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) and Manchester University, he secured positions in the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, before moving to Glasgow in 1955, where he took up the position of deputy leader of the Scottish National Orchestra. He was inspired by Glasgow's changing fortunes and painted a series of notable canvases featuring the beauty of a city in transition. His painting of trams and shipbuilding, to pick two of his fondest subjects, were presented with warmth and beauty, almost impressionistic in their depiction of glowing sunsets and use of rich colour. Herbert Whone (often incorrectly catalogued as Herbert Bannister Whone) continued to paint long after his departure from Glasgow in 1964 but it's the relatively small body of work produced in his nine years in the city that stand testament to his exceptional talent. Whone's Glasgow paintings, while highly collected and critically acclaimed, are still to attain the full recognition and commercial value they deserve and will surely eventually achieve. The three highest auction prices on record for his work have been achieved in the last eighteen months (all by McTear's) with lot 1705 18.01.2015 BACK COURT, ANDERSON (oil on canvas, signed and dated '64,126cm x 93cm) achieving £6500 (hammer) and 27.03.16 lot 2156 A GLASGOW WINTER selling for £8000 (hammer). Glasgow Museums and The National Galleries of Scotland hold examples of his work.
* TONY FORREST (BRITISH) PARLIAMENT, FROM SOUTHBANK oil on board, signed 90cm x 115cm Framed Note: Lots 2182 and 2183 are two paintings by one of the world's best known living wildlife artists. "I have been painting wildlife for the past 30 years but, living in Cornwall I have been inspired by artists down here and have, from time to time, painted other subjects. I am very inspired by the work of Ken Howard and others who are more interested in light and atmosphere than anything else. These two paintings were done in the early to mid 2000s. I went through a period of painting cities - London and New York being the main two. I stopped off at New York once on the way to Texas for my wildlife work (white tail deer, but that's another story!). I was so excited by New York that I decided to go back there to take photos and paint it. During the same period I was also travelling to London as it too was exciting to paint. These two are part of this series." Tony Forrests's paintings have been widely exhibited around the world and are sold in the UK through the network of Whitewall Galleries. The typical gallery price of these paintings would be approximately £11,000 each. Very few Tony Forrest paintings have appeared at public auction but a 76 x 101cm oil sold at Christie's 15.10.1998 lot 163 for £3600 (hammer).

PAUL CHABAS (FRENCH 1869 - 1937), LA NYMPHE oil on canvas, signed 30cm x 21cm Framed Note: Paul Chabas was born in Nantes, and trained under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1890. Chabas won the Prix National at the 1899 Paris Salon with his Joyeux Ébats. He was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 and in 1912 received the Médaille d'honneur. His preferred subject was the female nude in a natural setting. He was, and still is, considered to be one of Europe's greatest painters of nudes. His most famous painting, September Morn (1912), became a "Succès de scandale" in the United States in May, 1913. There was much publicity, and reproductions of the painting sold briskly for years afterwards. Chabas said he did not originally intend to sell the painting, because it was his wife's favorite. When he entered the painting in the Paris Salon of 1912, he set a price of $10,000, which he believed no one would pay. Leon Mantashev, son of oil magnate Alexander Mantashev, was willing to meet this price, and the painting was sold to him. In the 1890s, Chabas had illustrated books by such authors as Paul Bourget and Alfred de Musset. He also did some illustrating work for the French publisher Alphonse Lemerre. He became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1921 and received the Légion d'honneur in 1928. From 1925 to 1935 he was president of the Société des Artistes Français. He died in Paris on May 10, 1937 and it was reported at the time that US buyers alone had purchased more that seven million reproductions of his paintings. On 15th November 2015 McTear's sold a larger watercolour by Paul Chabas (lot 8, The Lily, for £6000 hammer)
