Tommy White made 193 appearances, scoring 66 goals between 1927 and 1936 and also made one England appearance.Dixie Dean made 399 appearances, scoring 349 goals between 1924 and 1937 and also made 16 England appearances, scoring 18 goals. Alex Troup made 24 appearances, scoring 32 goals between 1922 and 1929 and also made five Scotland appearances.

The Soviet Union were beaten 2-1 by West Germany in the 1966 World Cup semi-final at Everton's Goodison Park. Lev Yashin made 74 career appearances as goalkepper for the Soviet Union.

The Final, played at Old Trafford, was known as the 'Khaki Cup' due to the large number of uniformed soldiers in attendance.
