Almost precisely 100 years ago in June 1909, Everton, together with Tottenham Hotspur, became the first English professional clubs to travel and play matches in South America, visiting the then fledgling football nations of Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. The two English clubs played each other twice, the first match ending in a 2-2 draw, the second in a 4-0 win by Everton. Everton were undefeated on the tour, and seemingly in their honour a Chilean football club based in Vina del Mar changed its name to Corporacion Deportiva Everton as a result of the tour. The two teams have kept a close association and a delegation from Chile recently attended a dinner at Goodison Park in this centenary year. These photographs are a remarkable discovery and an invaluable and rare documentary of this historic football tour.
