Journal of a Voyage from Dublin to Bordeaux. A Tour to Pau, through the cities in the South East of France, The Pyreenees (sic) & Spain from 1st.February to 4th.October, 1842. Three folio volumes containing a manuscript account of this journey. The volumes are qtr. bound with red spines, marbled boards and black leather labels on the upper boards indicating their contents in gilt lettering with decorated borders. The written account describes the journey in detail with reference to a range of features and episodes including : 1. The outward journey from Dublin to Bordeaux by the Schooner 'The Harp' - "Left the Custom House dock in the schooner, Neil Fletcher Master, bound for Bordeaux from whence she brought wines and fruits. I was accompanied by my servant George Montgomery, a fine steady lad of about 18 years of age, a good protestant & reared on the Estate of Lord Eniskillen in Fermanagh, he therefore was a True Blue." There follows details of the crew and the ship's dog which had been rescued from drowning by the Captain and a favourite of all. 2. At Lazaretto,checking for plague aboard ship - "Request the attendance of the Doctor on board to examine us & see if any of us were plaguy (sic) looking people." 3. Accomodation at Pau -"We marched into a monstrous large house where we heard a suite of rooms was to be had, so they could, we were asked 500 Francs per month .... 'Bon Jour Madame' and off we went. 4. Complaints - 'We took up our quarters at the Hotel Vidal, it was recommended to me by a friend in Pau, Mr.Markham a Bookseller, because it was cheap. It certainly was "cheap" but at the same time it was "nasty". The house was dirty and I crept into a bed without curtains." There are also extensive descriptions of significant buildings, statues, works of art and topographical features together with a few illustrations. A unique, fascinating and original work.
