To Be Sold With No ReserveTwo lovers,Iran, circa 1900 or laterOil on canvas, he sitting in princely regalia holding a scepter, she holding a cup and a bottle, framed103 x 62.5cm.Provenance: Private UK Collection acquired before 1979Condition Report: The U. V inspection reveals many stains and blotches. The stains mostly occur on the suspended curtains above the seated rulers. They seem to be splatter of a liquid, not of colour pigments. The blotches are found on the ruler's elbow, the throne cushion, his knees, face, on the carpet, on the knees of the courtesan, the green field behind and above her. Those and the overall rendering of the painting may suggest one or several campaigns of repainting. To the naked eyes two other areas of blemishes or friction during storage in the lower fourth of the painting are noticeable : to the back foot of the throne and near the courtesan's heel. The painting's canvas - cursorily trimmed, perhaps formerly a larger composition, and laid on linen - is nailed and stapled to an ogival frame, itself attached to the rectangular frame which is fitted with the gilt mount visible on the face of the work, framing the scene.
