Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th century BCE. A finely-executed blackware skyphos with a rounded body, standing upon a tiered ring base, with twin upraised loop handles on either side of the cup. The monochromatic finish serves to accentuate the contours of this superb form. In tondo is an impressed pattern comprised of five leaf forms radiating from a minute circular depression and surrounded by a ring of repeating tongue motifs. A painted black bullseye comprised of concentric circles is visible on the underside of the vessel, which is a characteristic feature of Attic pottery. Size: 6.625" W handlespan x 2.25" H (16.8 cm x 5.7 cm)According to the Beazley Archive at the University of Oxford, "The term skyphos is ancient, although it seems also to have been used for cups (kylikes). Another term that is often used for deep straight-sided drinking vessels is the Greek kotyle (pl. kotylai), but this too seems to have been used in antiquity for cups of all sorts. Likewise, kylix also seems to have been used to refer to the shape we today term the skyphos." (http://www.beazley.ox.ac.uk/tools/pottery/shapes/skyphos.htm) Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private German collection, acquired in the 1980s Condition: Tiny - nearly invisible - scuffs here and there. Ancient Egypt, Early Dynastic to Old Kingdom, 1st to 6th Dynasty, ca. 3100 to 2181 BCE. An elegant and very early example of impressive Egyptian lapidary skill, a fine banded alabaster cup of a cylindrical form with a flared foot and rim. The pale-yellow alabaster is ringed with beautiful bands of caramel, golden-brown, grey, and citrine hues which illuminate when placed next to a bright light. Cups like this were used more as ceremonial vessels or offerings with votive or funerary contexts in ancient Egypt. Size: 2.125" W x 4.25" H (5.4 cm x 10.8 cm).Alabaster, which is a form of gypsum or calcite, soft to carve and smooth, was quarried along the length of the Nile, from Giza to just south of Luxor, and the Egyptians made its carved forms famous throughout the ancient world. Centuries later, the Greeks made vessels like this out of pottery and painted them white in imitation of the beautiful stone. On this example, as you examine the interior, you can see the grooves left behind from carving and smoothing it into its current form. Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Dr. Sid Port collection, California, USA, 1980s Condition: Small area of repair to rim. Light abrasions and nicks to foot, body, and rim, with light encrustations across interior cavity. Light earthen deposits throughout. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #146581
East Asia, China, Warring States Period to early Han Dynasty, ca. 475 BCE to 43 CE. A extremely rare example of a rock crystal ear cup (known as "erbei") of an ovoid form. The curved-bottomed cup has gently expanding walls which taper towards the top and create the thin rim from which a pair of semicircular "ear" handles project. The rock crystal is clear and translucent but has faint red/orange age deposits on its surface that give it a glass-like appearance. Cups like this example were heavily employed by the Chu peoples and were traditionally used for drinking wine, and the purpose of the handles was to provide stability so that none of the liquid was spilled. Size: 3.55" W x 0.95" H (9 cm x 2.4 cm)For a similar example, see Roger Chow, "Sparkling Splendours: The Art of Ancient Chinese Carvings on Rock Crystal and Agate, the Taoshi Zhai Collection", Hong Kong: The Art Museum, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2000, no. 220, pg. 209. Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Joe Gerena collection, New York, USA, 1990s Condition: Intact, with some surface scratching commensurate with age. Light deposits on surface. #146561

A HUNGARIAN GILT COPPER SOUVENIR WINE TASTER HERRENGRUND CIRCA 1745 oval with shaped lip richly embossed and chased with grapes and other fruit and vegetables within feathery foliage applied cast handles the underside of lip pricked: ‘Eisen . War . Ich . Küpfer . Bin . Ich . Silber . Trag . Ich . Golt . Bedeckt . Mich .’ 18.2cm wide The inscription (which may be translated as ‘Iron I was copper I am silver I carry gold covers me) refers to the method of obtaining copper in the Herrengrund mines in the mountains north of Budapest in modern day Slovakia. The local water had a high concentration of copper sulphate. Iron scraps were placed in hollows where the water collected and reacted with the copper sulphate to precipitate copper out of solution. The copper either settled as a sludge or formed a crust over the surface of the iron. This gave rise to the legend that the water had mysterious if not magical properties and the consequent production of such souvenir dishes tumbler cups and tobacco boxes.
