Patek Philippe, a Swiss 18K, enamel and diamond-set open face keyless lever pendant watch with brooch Signed Patek Philippe & Cie., Geneve, no.216”691, manufactured in 1895, the nickel-finished jewelled lever movement, cal. 10”, with a bi-metallic compensation balance and wolf’s tooth winding, no. 104”837, in an 18K frame with a glazed dust cover, the white enamel dial with Breguet numerals, gold Louis XV hands, the round outer case with translucent green champleve enamel on guilloche background and diamond-set floral and foliate decorated bezel and rim, the back centred by an asymmetrical polychrome enamel miniature depicting a Jardin turc (Turkish garden) within a diamond border; together with a matching translucent green enamel wing-shaped brooch with diamond-set Turkish motifs, dial and movement signed. Together with an extract from the Patek Philippe archives confirming production of the present watch with enamel painting Jardin Turc, rose-cut diamonds and green enamel in 1895 and its subsequent sale on 17 March 1897. Similarly decorated Art Nouveau pendant watches are on permanent exhibition at the prestigious Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.

An inlaid mahogany mantel chronometer Unsigned, early 19th century The circular four-pillar single fusee movement with Harrison's maintaining power and Earnshaw pattern chronometer escapement mounted on a vertical platform to the backplate and with wedge shaped weights and cylindrical compensation screws to the split bi-metallic balance, the frontplate scratch numbered 940G to the inside surface, the movement contained in a possibly later brass drum with internal glazed rear door, the 5 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with recessed subsidiary seconds dial below 12 o'clock and Breguet pattern blued steel hands, in a chamfer-top case with rectangular brass fishscale side frets and foliate inlaid apron panel beneath dial, on plinth base with brass ball feet, 30cm high. The general layout and detailing of movement and dial and the design of the case suggest this timepiece dates to circa 1830. The chronometer escapement is mounted on a separate rectangular platform similar to those found on later chronometer carriage clocks suggesting that this timepiece was specifically made as a precision mantel timepiece rather than being adapted from a marine chronometer.

Williamson, Royal Exchange, LONDON, the 4 inch circular gilt Roman numeral dial with foliate engraved centre, signed chapter ring and Breguet pattern blued steel hands, the patinated brass case with foliate cast hinged handle and glazed aperture to the stepped top above cavetto cornice, bevelled glass side and rear glasses and ring-turned pilasters to angles, with ogee moulded apron, on plinth base with disc feet, 23.5cm high excluding handle. Craighead and Webb are recorded in Britten, F.J. Old Clocks & Watches and their Makers as working 1848-1854.

James McCabe died in 1811, his business was continued under his name by his sons until 1883. The fact that this clock is signed with the full name and address indicates that it was considered to be a first quality product from the workshop.
