The eight-day outside countwheel bell striking movement with platform lever escapement and rectangular silvered brass Roman numeral dial with Breguet blued steel hands and signed DUVAL RUE D ORLEANS 8 A PARIS in an upward curve to the lower edge of the outer minute track, the early multi-piece bevel glazed case with hinged baton handle and gilt back panel with shuttered winding holes, on moulded skirt base, 15cm (6ins) high excluding handle. The case of the current lot can be closely compared with an engraved example illustrated in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS Their history and development plate VII/3 page 159.

A ship`s brass bulkhead timepiece. Unsigned, English, circa 1830. The rectangular movement with five-wheel train, horizontal platform lever escapement with monometallic balance, four column turned pillars pinned through the back and stamped B1455 next to lower left hand corner of the backplate, the 5.5 inch circular cream painted Roman numeral dial with blued steel Breguet hands, Slow/Fast regulation lever to upper margin and repeat numbered to lower border, the cylindrical cast brass case with push-button clasp for the hinged bevel-glazed bezel and with concentric band decoration to exterior, the steel backplate with two integral loops for attachment to a bulkhead, 18cm (7ins) diameter. The movement of the current lot, although unsigned, closely compares to to an example with silvered dial signed Arnold, 84 STRAND sold in these rooms 16th February 2011 (lot 33). Both movements share the same rectangular cartouche stamp for the letter `B` of the serial number (stamped to the backplate of each movement).

John Roger Arnold, London, an 18 carat gold chronometer pocket watch with `Z` balance, no.1748, the three piece case hallmarked London 1808, casemaker TH (possibly Thomas Hardy), the white enamel dial signed Arnold 1748, with black Roman numerals, outer seconds dial, gilt spade hands, and subsidiary seconds dial, the full plate lever fusee movement signed Jno R Arnold London Inv et Fecit no.1748, balance cock engraved with scrolling foliage and diamond endstone, blued steel helical balance spring and two-arm monometallic `Z` balance with compensation weights, and blued steel maintaining power, the case 55mm diameter, on an 18 carat gold fetter link chain, 77g. Also see Christie`s New York 15 June 2011 lot 145. John Roger Arnold (1769-1843) was the son of John Arnold, one of the most famous British watch and clock makers. In 1783 John Roger started working with his father before moving to Paris as an apprentice to Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1792. He was admitted as a member of the Clockmakers` Company in 1796 and became Master in 1817. After the death of John Arnold senior, John Roger continued on his own, upholding his father`s reputation as one of the leading watch and clock makers of his age.

The four pillar single fusee movement with anchor escapement and shouldered plates, the 12 inch circular convex white painted Roman numeral dial with blued steel Breguet variant hands and signed E. ROSSITER, CLEVEDON to centre within a cast brass bezel and octagonal surround inlaid with mother-of-pearl curved foliate panels, the drop-trunk with rectangular glazed lenticle within conforming inlay to angles flanked by fruiting foliate carved ears, the curved base with pendulum adjustment access flap within marquetry to borders, 74cm (29ins) high. Ebenezer Rossiter is recorded in Moore, A.J., THE CLOCKMAKERS OF SOMERSET 1650-1900 as working from Hill Road Clevedon circa 1875. The current lot has a paper trade label inscribed E. ROSSITER, 1 REGENT PLACE, Clevedon pasted to the inside of the backboard.

The eight-day countwheel bell striking movement with circular white enamel Roman numeral convex dial with blued steel Breguet hands and foliate milled bezel, set into an ogee-shouldered plinth with foliate spray applied lower quadrants and supporting a music stand for a cherub stood on a cushioned stool and leaning on a columnar pedestal whilst playing his woodwind instrument to the right of the movement, on rectangular plinth base applied with a relief panel cast with a musical trophy to apron and on engine turned bell-shaped feet, 27cm high.

The eight-day striking movement with silk suspension and signed Durand a Paris to backplate, the circular gilt Roman numeral dial with recessed centre, Breguet hands and foliate cast bezel set into cast bronze rocky outcrop flanked by a pair of cherubs making arrows for cupid, on rectangular plinth base applied with cast bow and quiver ribbon-tied mount to apron above leaf mounded skirt, (formerly with `waterfall` automaton, lacking bell), 29cm high.

The eight-day bell striking movement with silk suspension, the dial with small white enamel Roman numeral cartouche numerals set into a floral wreath issuing ribbons incorporating pivoted shutters for the winding holes and with blued steel Breguet hands, fronting a rectangular plinth with mounts cast as quiver of arrows applied to angles and Trajan script engraved passage beneath chapter ring beside standing figure of a naked putto leaning over to blow bubbles (pipe and glass bubbles lacking), on plinth base applied with tied floral festoon cradling a winged cherub holding a flaming torch and a butterfly to front, the skirt with repeating leaf cast top moulding and compressed bun feet, 45cm high.

The five-pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with shouldered plates and anchor escapement, the 5.25 inch square single-sheet silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed PORTHOUSE, Northampton Square, LONDON to centre with blued steel Breguet hands and fine foliate scroll engraved decoration to spandrels, the case with bevel glazed tablet upstand above cavetto and ripple moulded cornice and bevelled side glasses, on slender ogee shaped plinth base with moulded skirt and disc feet, 33cm (13ins) high; with later purpose-made wall bracket with conforming moulded platform above a scroll shaped support, 53cm (21ins) high overall. Provenance: The property of a private collector. Thomas Porthouse is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London c1820-60, Baillie notes in his entry that Thomas Porthouse was Turret Clockmaker to The Admiralty.

The five pillar twin chain fusee movement with anchor escapement, ting-tang striking the quarters on a pair of graduated bells and striking the hour on the larger of the two, the shouldered backplate with pendulum holdfast and signed Simmons, LONDON to lower margin, the 6 inch square silvered brass Roman numeral dial with blued steel Breguet hands and repeat signature to centre within a canted surround, the chamfer-top case with edge ribs to the hipped upstand above canted angles and rectangular fishscale pierced sound frets to sides, on plinth base with gadroon moulded skirt, (lacking finial and feet), 34cm (13.5ins high). Ebenezer Simmons is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London 1815-25

The five pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement, strike/silent lever and signed Grant, Fleet Street, LONDON to the lancet shaped backplate, the 7 inch circular silvered brass Roman numeral circular dial with repeat signature to centre, blued steel Breguet style hands and convex glazed cast bezel, the case with crescent shaped amboyna inlaid panel above dial and satinwood banded interlaced ebony line lozenge decorated panel infill to apron within ebony ground repeating lozenge border and with gilt slender three-quarter columns to angles, the sides with gilt lion mask ring handles above brass tracery pierced Gothic side frets, on stepped skirt base with ebonised mouldings and later cast paw feet, 41cm (16ins) high. John Grant junior who is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from Fleet Street 1817-67. The bespoke nature of the movement with its lancet shaped plates and the high quality of the veneers suggests that the current lot was made to order for a particularly discerning client.

The twin fusee five pillar bell striking movement with anchor escapement and pendulum holdfast to the border-engraved shouldered backplate signed Wm. Stephenson, London to lower margin, the 7 inch white painted Roman numeral break-arch dial with blued steel Breguet hands and subsidiary STRIKE/SILENT dial to arch, the break-arch case with brass carrying handle and cavetto moulding above brass-fillet inset front door and rectangular fishscale sound frets to sides, on moulded skirt base with brass bracket feet, 37cm (14.5ins) high excluding handle. The current was probably made by William Stevenson who is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers` Company in 1794.

A Regency patinated bronze, ormolu and white marble `Weeks Museum` type figural mantel timepiece, Thomas Coleman, London, Circa 1815. The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement with anchor escapement and 3.5 inch circular white Roman numeral enamel dial with blued steel Breguet hands within a milled gilt bezel, the case surmounted with an ormolu bust of Arthur Wellesley, 1st. Duke of Wellington above drum supported on foliate scroll volutes and festoon applied block flanked by patinated bronze seated Classical females each reading a book, the left hand book gilt highlighted and signed T. Coleman, 6 Westmorland St., London, 1797 to the open pages, on marble plinth base applied with gilt grotesque mask flanked by foliate festoons and with lobed gilt bun feet, (lacking pendulum) 31cm (12ins) high. Thomas Coleman is recorded in Baillie, G.H, Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as being admitted to the Clockmakers` Company in 1794, gaining his Freedom in 1806. He was subsequently elevated to Liveryman in 1813 and recorded working from Westmorland Street, London until 1840. The presence of the ormolu bust surmount of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington suggests that the current lot was made shortly after the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo on 18th June 1815.

The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement with Vulliamy type wide jaw pendulum suspension and signed Ganthony, London to backplate, the 3.5 inch circular gilt Roman numeral dial with engine turned centre and blued steel Breguet hands within a milled bezel, the case with gilt drum on scroll cast volutes and black marble plinth base with gilt foliate cast top moulding and skirt base with engine turned bun feet, (lacking pendulum), 20.5cm (8ins) high. Richard Ganthony is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as being admitted to the Clockmakers` Company in 1785 and gaining his Freedom in 1794. He was appointed Master in 1828 whilst working from Lombard Street, London and died in 1845.
