S.(Simon) Okolski 1641, No.6422Signed: MovementSize: 61mm Accompaniments: Fitted wooden box, winding key, three spare 18K gold case back panelsFootnotes:Deriving from the private collection of a German Professor of Medicine, the current lot is to be offered for sale from the descendants of the family. The Professor had a great love of travelling and collecting which took him, alongside his career, to many of the annual auctions in London and Geneva with certain of his pieces being exhibited in Germany. This watch is an excellent representation of what can be achieved through passion, appreciation and an eye for quality. Privately commissioned, the watch case features beautifully enamelled panels to the fore and reverse whilst the Baume & Co movement is a skilfully executed piece of horological craftmanship from the turn of the century.Applied to the case are two handsomely finished pieces of enamel work. The front depicts the Professors family crest which hails back to Prussia in the 1840s. The lore of the family is that during battle a Knight pulled a small oak tree from the ground before proceeding to save the life of one of the kings involved in the skirmish. In gratitude, the King made the Knight a Baron and named the land after him which can now be found in modern day Poland. To the reverse of the case is the more familiar Rod of Asclepius. Not to be confused with the Caduceus borne by Hermes, the rod is represented by a single serpent wrapped around a staff and is commonly associated with healing and medicine. Asclepius was the son of Apollo and Coronis, a mortal, and was taught the art of healing by the centaur Chiron. His renown for healing steadily grew but it was not until after his death when he was smote down on Zeus's orders that his cult established fully. As such it is believed that it is in this process that the staff and serpent merge to form one icon as they originally were seen as separate symbols. The desire to ensure the watch represented something personal and of high quality by the Professor is furthered by the engraved inscription on the cuvette by Simon or Szymon Okolski, a celebrated heraldry specialist and historian. Roughly translated, the Latin inscription is a reminder of what as human beings we need in order to live a wholesome and rewarding life – virtue, integrity and honesty. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A producer, writer and screenwriter, Edward Lewis is perhaps best known as producer of the blockbuster Universal Pictures production Spartacus, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards and a BAFTA Award. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the film's all-star cast included Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons and Charles Laughton. To write the screenplay, Lewis secretly enlisted Dalton Trumbo, one of the Hollywood Ten who had been blacklisted as part of Senator Joseph McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee investigations into communism among members of the entertainment industry. Although Trumbo had written other screenplays under pseudonyms while blacklisted, Spartacus was among the first to break the stigma of the Hollywood Ten, as Lewis insisted on including Trumbo in the film credits. Edward Lewis had produced Spartacus at the suggestion of his wife, Mildred, who was a producer and writer in her own right. Mildred Lewis was largely responsible for bringing a film to life that captured the zeitgeist of 1970s experimentation and defined both the 'dark comedy' and the 'sleeper'. That film was Harold and Maude, written by Colin Higgins, who at the time was the Lewis' pool boy. Higgins introduced the script to Mildred Lewis, who ultimately served as the film's executive producer. Edward and Mildred were partners in both work and life. During their 73 year marriage, they collaborated on numerous film, theater and literary projects. Together, the couple produced the 1982 film Missing, which received four Academy Award nominations, five Golden Globe nominations and seven BAFTA nominations, and shared the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. They also co-wrote the ground-breaking 1977 film Brothers. In addition to their work in entertainment, Edward and Mildred were active in civil rights causes and were passionate art collectors. Bonhams is delighted to offer a selection of pieces from the Lewis' collection throughout the coming months.

Original catalogue and bill of sale included with this lot. Other notes: A. Favre & Fils is one of Switzerland's oldest watchmaking companies. A record in the Neuchâtel State Archives states that on March 29, 1718, a contract is signed between Abraham Favre and the master watchmaker, Daniel Gagnebin, in which the former commits to teach Favre "The profession of the watchmaker to the extent of his knowledge" for a period of three years. This document marks the beginning of the Favre watchmaking history. Abraham Favre worked with his brother in-law, Jacques-Frédéric Houriet, who is regarded by many as the father of Swiss chronometry. Favre was later invited to work on timepieces by the great Abraham-Louis Breguet. One of his masterpieces, a magnificent pocket watch of Louis XVI style manufactured before 1790, is in the Watchmaking Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds. It is signed A. Favre fils au Locle. The movement in this example is known as the 'Henry' as a tribute to Henry A. Favre - 8th generation watchmaker and the first to introduce the twin barrel movement, giving a power reserve of up to 84 hours, and the sleek design of the case was inspired by stealth technology, giving it a very contemporary look. The company, now in its 10th generation of watchmakers, still produces watches to this day, and this example is apparently still available priced at 42.353 Eur. (approx. £37,500.00)
