An early Victorian rosewood dial timepiece with 8 inch dial. Carter, London, mid 19th century. The four pillar single chain fusee movement with large platform lever escapement with monometallic balance and jewelled pallets, the 8 inch circular silvered brass Roman numeral dial with recessed subsidiary seconds dial and signed CARTER, 61 Cornhill, London to centre and blued steel Breguet style moon hands within cast brass glazed bezel with canted silver surround to inner edge, the circular rosewood case with egg-and-dart moulded surround and brass hanging eye, 29.5cm (11.75ins) diameter. John Carter is recorded in Baillie G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as apprenticed in 1817 and gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1829. He was an accomplished chronometer maker who won numerous awards at the 1838 chronometer trials; by 1840 he had set up business in 61 Cornhill. In 1855 Carter and held the position of jurer at the Imperial Exhibition held in Paris and was appointed Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers three times (in 1856, 59, and 64). As well as being a highly skilled horologist John Carter was also notable as a civic activist -perhaps due to his experiences as a child as he was orphaned at an early age. His charitable nature lead him to be elected Lord Mayor in 1859, he died 1878.

The circular eight-day single train movement with replaced platform lever escapement and stamped AD within an oval cartouche and numbered 147 to backplate, the circular white enamel Roman numeral dial with blued steel Breguet style moon hands and silvered bezel set above a conforming aneroid barometer dial calibrated in barometric inches and with the usual observations into a floral engraved gilt mask incorporating applied opposing CENTIGRADE and FAHRENHEIT scale thermometers, the bevel glazed moulded case of oval outline with hinged serpentine shaped handle to top and on moulded oval pedestal foot, 16.5cm (6.5ins) high excluding handle.

The eight-day two train outside countwheel bell striking movement with silvered platform lever escapement and stamped with oval BOLLVILLER, A PARIS trademark and numbered 362 LM to backplate, the rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial with repeat signature beneath VI and fine blued steel Breguet style moon hands, the bevel glazed case with hinged mask and scroll cast carrying handle above large top glass and conforming frieze decorated with central reclining figure flanked by lion’s mask cast projecting corner panels, the uprights with further leafy trail infill to panels, on stepped base with female masks to corner panels and with integral bracket feet, the rear of the case with conforming symmetrical foliate scroll cast gilt brass door incorporating shutters for the winding and adjustment squares, 14.5cm (5.75ins) high excluding handle. Bolviller is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development (page 432) as working from several addresses in Paris from 1830 until after 1870. Bollviller are known for being relatively early and inventive makers of fine French carriage clocks. The case of the current lot demonstrates the transition from one-piece to early multi-piece and is decorated in the Louis XIII revival taste, a style which became fashionable during the reign of Louis Philippe (1830-48).

An historically important circular section of original aircraft fabric cut from a Breguet of the 9th Aero Squadron (Night Reconnaissance), painted in black, grey and white with the unit insignia of searchlight beams which form an `IX`, some flaking and chipping but overall in good original condition, 20in (51cm) diam. The 9th Bombardment Squadron began as the 9th Aero Squadron at Camp Kelly, Texas, 14 June 1917. The Unit was posted to England in December 1917 for intensive combat training flying the Sopwith Scout. Moved to the front in August 1918, the 9th was assigned to the First Army Observation Group and began to fly a new aircraft, the French Breguet 14. This aircraft was used extensively to perform the unit`s mission, night reconnaissance, and to reduce visibility the aircraft were painted black. (1)

J.H.Diedrich in Einbeck, a rare gilt metal open faced pocket watch with Pouzait escapement and calendar, circa 1820, the two piece case with white enamel dial, black Roman chapter ring in the lower half, a date dial above, with fine blued steel Breguet hands, and independent dead seconds, the Pouzait escapement with large brass four arm balance (40mm diameter), large openwork cock extending two thirds of the top plate with index regulator and egg and dart border, the case 58mm diameter. Jean Moise Pouzait presented a model for this escapement to the Geneva Society of Arts in 1786. The idea appears to derive from the pin-wheel escapement in clocks. Pouzait, who eleven years earlier had invented the independent seconds mechanism, seems to have developed this new lever escapement in an attempt to simplify the mechanism for dead seconds.
