A Louis Philippe gilt and patinated bronze figural mantel clock, Pons, Paris, circa 1840, the eight-day two train countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum incorporating silk suspension and stamped with Pons, MEDAILLE D'OR, 1827 roundel over serial number 2131 to backplate, the circular silvered Roman numeral dial with blued steel trefoil hands within rope-twist cast surround, the case modelled with a 17th century mariner resting on a rocky outcrop with globe, anchor and a chart over plinth base incorporating generous gilt repeating leaf cast decoration to skirt and anthemion cast feet, 43cm high, 28cm wide, 10cm deepPierre-Honoré-César Pons was born in Paris in 1773 and after studying with the Jesuits in the rue Mouffetard he went to train under the eminent clockmaker Antide Janvier. Unfortunately the unrest of the French Revolutionary period disrupted his training but he was recommended by Janvier to the prestigious Lepaute family who took him on in 1798. Pons completed his training under the Lepautes and developed an interest in precision horology; in 1803 he opened his own workshop rue de la Huchette, near the Place Saint-Michel. In order to satisfy the financial demands of running a workshop, whilst taking time to work on the development of precision horology, Pons acted as supplier of movements to many the eminent horologists of the period such as Berthoud, Breguet and Lepine. During this time he developed several escapements and created improved wheel-cutting and pinion polishing machines. With the encouragement of Ferdinand Berthoud in 1804 Pons presented his 'Observations sur l'échappement libre' to the Academy of Sciences where it was praised by the jury and the Academy congratulated him. Around this time the French clockmaking town of Saint-Nicholas d'Aliermont was in crisis due to the collapse of the industry. Napoleon's minister responsible for Fine Arts, Industry and Commerce, the Count de Champagny, ordered the Académie des Sciences to find someone suitable to turn the industry around. Honoré Pons was approached as he had the necessary skills and had developed the tools and practices most appropriate for the task. After a period of reluctance he accepted on the basis that the state will pay him a generous amount for his machines as long as they were installed and used in the Saint Nicholas workshops. By 1808 Pons was producing fine quality 'blanc-roulants' for an affordable price which received high praise from makers such as Breguet and recognition by the Academie in their report to Napoleon Bonaparte. Over the following decades Honoré Pons expanded the Saint Nicholas operations and became a principal supplied of movements to the Parisian clockmaking trade from his premises in Paris's rue de la Barillerie on the île de la Cité. In 1827 he was awarded a gold medal and in 1839 was awarded the Croix de la Légion d'Honneur by King Louis Philippe. In 1846, at the end of an illustrious career, pons sold his firm to Borromée Délépine and retired, living in an elegant Parisian mansion at 20, rue Cassette.

An exceptionally fine and rare mid 20th century gilt brass-mounted burr walnut table chronometer with original numbered safety winding keyCharles Frodsham, Clockmaker to H.M. the King, London, 2473. The case modelled on the original 'Sympathetique' clock by Abraham Louis Breguet created in 1814 and in now the British Royal Collection, with curved handle over an oval inspection panel framed by a star-cast running border, each corner set with a three-quarter burr wood column, on a plinth base with heavy gilt brass plate underneath carrying the four levelling screw feet, both sides and doors framed in a cast gilt brass border. The 5.25 inch by 4.25 inch one-piece silvered dial with engraved minute track enclosing the Roman numerals, large subsidiary seconds dial at XII and the power reserve dial at VI, (marked 0-8 with instruction to wind at seven days), with good original blued steel hands throughout. The dial secured to the front plate of the movement via three heavy gilt dial feet screwed from the rear. The movement with thick plates united by four heavy pillars screwed front and back, and further mounted on a substantial brass baseplate with three heavy L-shaped brackets, the single chain fusee with Harrison's maintaining power to an Earnshaw type spring detent escapement mounted on a large platform, with heavy cut and compensated bi-metallic balance on a freesprung blued steel helical spring with diamond endstone, the contrate wheel arbor in a double-screwed jewelled chaton, the backplate with engine turned finish and signed in a polished reserve 'Chas Frodsham, 27 South Molton St., London, 2473'. Together with the original safety winding key, numbered 2473 and with the name 'V. KENNETT'. 31cmns (12ins) to the top of the raised handle.Footnotes:Provenance:Single family ownership for approximately the last 80 years. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a Frodsham/'Breguet' clock has been offered for sale by auction. The high class firm of Charles Frodsham Ltd. created this clock in 1949 as part of their small series of 'reproduction' clocks - other table clocks in the series included 'The Cumming' priced at £49 with plain dial, £53 with a mounted dial; 'The Tompion' priced at £30-32 depending on the mounts, and 'The Ellicott' £28-32 as well as others (for a full list see Mercer, pages 178-182. At £290, The Breguet was by far and away the most expensive of the table clocks. It was the pinnacle of the Frodsham range and perhaps represents more an homage from one great horology house to another, rather than a simple reproduction. With the pick of Breguet's output to chose from, Frodshams opted for Breguet's sympathetique number 666, originally sold to The Prince Regent (later George IV) in 1814 for the princely sum of 11,500 francs, this clock is still in the Royal Collection today. The movement for the clock was supplied before the Second World War by Mercers, and was only cased up by them once trade had returned to some normalcy in 1949. Literature:Daniels, G. (1975) The Art of Breguet. London: Sotheby Parke Bernet, Colour plate II and plates 141 a-e for image of the original Sympathetique. Mercer, T. (1981) The Frodshams The Story of a Family Chronometer Makers. Kent: The Antiquarian Horological Society, plate 51 for a copy of the 1949 catalogue entry alongside other much cheaper clocks in the same series. Lot 63

A unique and previously unrecorded mid 19th century engraved and gilt brass-mounted, coromandel calendar timepiece with long duration movement and thermometerRetailed by Howell James and Co, supplied by Thomas Cole, London. The French movement by Achille Brocot, No. 2803The case:veneered in richly grained coromandel, with darker sections used on the plinth mouldings and frames for the side panels, surmounted by a crisply engraved gilt-brass cupola on a plinth set at a 45 degree angle and decorated all over with engraved palmettes and interlocking latticework, on a beaded base, over curved shoulders to the canted corners, each corner set with a male or female term figure, the men with winged helmets, (representing Mercury), the women holding their own hair, (possibly representing Opportunity?), the stepped moulded base with heavy gilt brass band, (the original adjustable bun feet lacking, and now sold with replacement scroll feet, removed for the purposes of illustration, but accompanying the lot), the two arched glazed sides mounted with remarkable cut and engraved brass panels displaying a central urn of flowers within an exotic niche with anthemion border and quatrefoil arch framing a pair of crossed palm trees. The dial:the arched silvered dial measuring 12.5cms x 27cms (5ins x 10.5ins) with typical finely cut and finished blued steel hands reading against a Roman chapter ring with minute track framing an engraved centre of quartered anthemions, the mid section of the dial plate engraved with a repeat shaded quatrefoil pattern centred by the polished steel winding square shrouded by a shaped gilt brass escutcheon, over a curved glass mercury thermometer with lettered scale (FREEZG. - TEMPE. - SUMR. - BLOOD.- FEVER.) and the manual calendar table of engraved panels numbered 1-31, reading against a manually rotated day-of-the-week drum, flanked by engraved tendrils. The movement:The French long-duration movement by Achille Brocot, using his special jewelled deadbeat escapement behind the dial and driven by five spring barrels to give extended duration, the 12.5 inch long pendulum suspended from the original gilt brass pendulum block mounted on the underside of the cupola section, the brass base panel below mounted with the original sprung pendulum lock, in typical Cole fashion. 63cms (25ins) on the scroll feet. 57.5cms (22.5ins) high without the scroll feet. Footnotes:The two Cole brothers, James Ferguson (1798- 1880) and his younger brother Thomas (1800-1864) made an indelible mark on English horology in the 19th century. J.F.Cole has been dubbed 'The English Breguet' because of the exceptional watches and travelling clocks he produced. Thomas was awarded a medal for 'excellence of taste and design' in the 1862 London Exhibition, and the leader of the jury, Charles Frodsham wrote 'nothing could exceed the beauty of design and good taste of the varied models and general excellence of workmanship.' As well as signing his own name, Thomas was happy to supply various high class retailers. Most of Thomas's output was concentrated on his strut timepieces, usually less than 6 or 7 inches in height and occasionally incorporating manual calendar mechanisms. He also produced a range of 'novelty' timepieces in various forms such as cheval mirrors, mortars, bonbon dishes, candlesticks, inkstands and urns. Larger tripod clocks were also part of his stock. Mantel clocks - as opposed to strut, novelty or tripod clocks - account for a tiny percentage of his output. Hawkins in 'Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking' Sydney, 1975, pp95-101 describes just three. Two of these are in gilt brass, and one is in coromandel. The latter example is illustrated in colour on the front cover of the book. Another coromandel example was sold in these rooms on 8th July 2015, lot 109, for a hammer price of £50,000. The current lot is now the third such clock to come to light; each is unique, suggesting that they were only made in exceptional circumstances, possibly for one of the international exhibitions at which Cole exhibited, 1851 Crystal Palace, 1855 Paris and 1862 London. The three known coromandel examples in summary:Hawkins front cover: Un-numbered, month duration movement, wound below VI. Dial divided into quarters, no seconds indication, but with power reserve hand, manual calendar table and vertical thermometer. Lattice-work engraved mask. Four applied winged figures. Glazed sides with pierced and engraved gilt mask. Hawkins suggests possibly made for the 1862 London Exhibition. Bonhams July 2015: Numbered 1594, retailed by Thomas Boxell, Brighton. Long duration movement wound below VI. Dial divided into quarters, subsidiary seconds dial, but no further features or side panels. Two applied winged figures. The current lot: Un-numbered, retailed by Howell James & Co. Replacement long duration movement. Dial divided into quarters, no seconds indication, but with manual calendar table and curved thermometer. Lattice-work engraved mask. Four applied figures. Glazed sides with pierced and engraved gilt mask. The figures of this clock allude to trade and enterprise - perfect symbols for international exhibitions of the mid 19th century. The figure of Mercury is instantly recognizable by his winged hat, or petasus. One of the twelve Greek gods of Olympus, he also appears in Roman art and was revered by them as the god of Commerce, hence the purse he points to in his raised left hand. In allegorical terms, he personifies Eloquence and Reason - none of this would have been lost on Cole's highly educated, and by definition, commercially successful, clientele. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
