Benjamin Ferrers, d. 1732, Portrait of Lady Mary Fleming, wife of Harry Maule of Kellie, later inscribed with the identity of the sitter and an erroneous birth date; inscribed Benj Ferrers Pinxt, oil on canvas in a painted oval, 73x61cm.; 28.75x24in. The sitter was daughter of William, 5th Earl of Wigton, and his wife, Henrietta, daughter of Charles Seton, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline. She was the sister of the 6th and 7th Earls of Wigton, and in 1695 she married the Hon. Harry Maule, of Kellie. He was the son of George Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure and his wife, Lady Jean Campbell.

The sitter was the son of George Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure and his wife, Lady Jean Campbell. In 1695 he married Lady Mary Fleming, the daughter of William, 5th Earl of Wigton.

He was sent to France for his education and remained a staunch Jacobite throughout his life. He married three times, firstly to Margaret, daughter of Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres. He married secondly Mary, daughter of William Keith, 8th Earl Marischal, and married as his third wife, Eupheme, daughter of George Lockhart of Carnwath, County Lanark.

She married, John, 6th Earl of Wigton, as his second wife, and the present work may even be a marriage portrait.

The sitter was the son of William, 5th Earl of Wigton and his wife, Henrietta, daughter of Charles Seton, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline. He succeeded his brother to the earldom circa 1744. He was a staunch Jacobite and died unmarried.
Circle of Alexis Simon Belle, 1647-1734, Portrait of Field Marshal, The Hon. James Keith (1696-1758), later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, 115x88cm.; 45.25x34.75in. The sitter was the second son of William, 9th Earl Marischal and his wife, Lady Mary Drummond, daughter of the 1st Earl of Perth. He served as a Field Marshal in the army of Frederick the Great of Prussia, and fought bravely during the Seven YearsÕ War. He was eventually killed at the Battle of Hochkirck.
Attributed to Sir John Baptist Medina, 1659-1710, Portrait of George Keith, 8th Earl of Marischal (died 1694), later erroneously inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, 116x89cm.; 45.75x35in. The sitter was the son of William Keith, 5th Earl of Marischal, and his wife, Mary, daughter of John Erskine, Earl of Mar. He served in the French army, where he became a colonel. He held a command, ex parte Regis, at the Battle of Preston in 1648, where the royalists were soundly defeated, and again, on 3rd September 1851 at Worcester, where the Scots were overwhelmed by Cromwell. He was taken prisoner and sent to Windsor castle. After his release, he participated in the ceremonial opening of Parliament, riding Ôout before, with a permission cap, and a baton in his handÕ. He married Mary Hay, the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Kinnoull, in 1662. She was Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen. He succeeded his brother, the 6th Earl in 1671.

The sitter was the son of James Drummond Fullerton-Elphinstone, and his second wife, Anna Maria, the only child of Admiral Sir Edward Buller, Bt, MP. He succeeded his cousin John Elphinstone Fleming, 14th Lord Elphinstone, who died unmarried in 1861. He married Constance Euphemia, the second daughter of the 6th Earl of Dunmore in 1864.

The sitter was the son of James Drummond Fullerton-Elphinstone, and his second wife, Anna Maria, the only child of Admiral Sir Edward Buller, Bt, MP. He succeeded his cousin John Elphinstone Fleming, 14th Lord Elphinstone, who died unmarried in 1861. After a decorated career in the Royal Navy, where he held the rank of Captain and received the 5th Class of the Turkish Order of the Medjidie, he was created Baron Elphinstone in 1885. He married Constance Euphemia, the second daughter of the 6th Earl of Dunmore in 1864.

The sitter was the daughter of Charles John Clavering. In 1820 she married James Buller-Fullerton-Elphinstone as his first wife.

Mather Brown, 1761-1831, Portrait of Henry Blundell (1724-1810), signed, oil on canvas, unframed, 78x65cm.; 30.75x25.5in. The sitter was a prominent local citizen of Liverpool and a keen art collector. He was the son of Robert Blundell, and his wife, Catharine, daughter of Sir Rowland Stanley of Hooton. In 1760 Blundell married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir George Mostyn, and they lived together at Ince-Blundell Hall. He ammassed a fine collection of art and it was said that "a vigorous weeding-out could only have heightened the value of the collection". The present portrait was probably painted shortly before his death in 1809, and it is likely that Mather Brown produced two replicas of this portrait.
