ƒ Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988)SANS TITRE (Self portrait with tie), 1985Huile sur toileSignée et datée au dosOil on canvasSigned and dated on the reverse83,5 x 56 cm - 32 7/8 x 22 in. Provenance :Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, ZurichCollection particulièreExposition :Lugano, Museo d’Arte Moderna, Jean-Michel Basquiat, 20 mars-19 juin 2005, décrit et reproduit sous le n°44 page 168 du catalogue de l’exposition Un certificat d’authenticité du Authentication Committee of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, en date du 29 septembre 2000, ainsi qu’un certificat d’authenticité de la Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, en date du 1er octobre 2012, seront remis à l’acquéreur« Armani suits were one of the things that the artist felt most comfortable wearing. He would receive people at his studio wearing one with paint splattered over it, sometimes in bare feet. Rather than trying to have the suit cleaned he would simply buy a new one. Basquiat was quite fond of ties, and can be seen wearing one in many photographs of the time. The stylistic details of this painting are unusual. In part this is because this self-portrait is one of the few paintings that the artist made using oil paint. It was painted at the Bischofberger house in St. Moritz.”Luca Marenzi In Jean-Michel Basquiat, Catalogue de l’exposition au Museo d’Arte Moderna della Cittá di Lugano, édition Skira, 2005Si l’on connaît de nombreux autoportraits de Jean-Michel Basquiat, Self-portrait with tie est particulièrement singulier. Il fait d’ailleurs la couverture du journal The New York Times, en février 1985, illustrant l’article intitulé « New Art, New Money : the Marketing of an American Artist ». » Henry Geldzahler
