Jewelled Binding.- Sangorksi (Alberto, calligrapher and illuminator, 1862-32).- Keats (John) La Belle Dame sans Merci and other poems [Ode on a Grecian Urn & Ode to Psyche], illuminated manuscript in black, gold and colours on vellum, 21pp. including title, title in gold with miniature watercolour portrait of la Belle Dame within large gold initial "L" and miniature portrait of Keats initialled and dated 1928 within frame, 4 large full-page watercolours as frontispiece/titles/tail-piece (knight, Grecian urn, tail-piece of Erechtheion, Psyche with peacocks), 5 smaller watercolour illustrations in text (knight leading la Belle Dame on horseback, the Acropolis, woodland path, naked Psyche on her bed, Cupid & Psyche), text written in semi-gothic script in black ink with 14 illuminated initials and richly decorative borders in colours and gold, with colophon at end stating "...designed, written out, and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski. He worked for Sangorksi & Sutcliffe, who became known for their jewelled bindings, and also for Rivière & Son from 1910. He produced for both many such highly-decorated illuminated manuscripts, the most famous of which, "the Great Omar", was lost when the Titanic sank in 1912.
Dighton the Elder (Robert, 1752-1814) A collection of 19 early caricatures printed before 1802, including a slightly trimmed impression of Dighton's self-portrait holding a portfolio that reads "A Book of Heads", an early state of 'The Specious Orator' before additional letters, six caricatures with theatrical interest, one of Sarah Siddons, and other humorous caricatures of obese butchers and social satires, etchings, two duplicates, all but one with hand-colouring, on various papers, sheets approx. 205 x 155 mm. (8 x 6 in) to 340 x 290 mm. (13 1/2 x 11 1/2 in), occasional defects to sheets, some with light exposure lines and toning, all but 4 are unframed, circa 1794-1802; together with The Profane laying hands on the Over Righteous; a real Scene on Tower Hill, after Dighton, showing a Methodist preacher standing on a barrel with both arms out, his hat in one hand, one eye closed, while a press gang closes in on him, etching and engraving on laid paper without watermark, published by Robert Sayer, [circa 1784]; and two hand-coloured mezzotints after Dighton watercolour designs, including 'Poor Jack' [BM Satires 7817], and 'The Lamplighter' [BM Satires undescribed], both impressions with severe loss, browning and surface dirt, unframed, [circa 1790-1791] (22)Provenance:Ex-collection of David Padbury
Dighton the Elder (Robert), attributed to. Family group portrait in an interior, pencil on laid paper, bears signature lower left, mounted on laid paper support with slightly indistinct watermark date of '1797', with double ruled border, 180 x 290 mm. (7 1/8 x 11 1/2 in), under glass, repaired tears and some areas of abrasion, damp-stained and light browning, unframed, [circa 1780-1800s]Provenance:Ex-collection of David Padbury⁂ The lady in the lower right bears a likeness to an etched portrait by Robert Dighton the Elder, the sitter of which is purportedly the artist's first wife, Letitia Dighton [for an impression see BM no. 1850,0810.123]. The young central gentleman appears to be somewhat derivative of Robert Dighton the Elder's etched self-portrait of 1779.

Dighton Junior (Robert, 1803-1805) Five caricatures, including a profile portrait of Sir Brook Watson (1735-1807) whose leg was taken off by a shark at Havanna aged 14 and later became a director at the Bank of England, three military caricatures, and a portrait of Mr Read, Brewer of Oxford, etchings with hand-colouring, on various wove papers, between approx. 290 x 170 mm. Naval.- Duguay-Trouin (René) Memoires de Monsieur Du Guay-Trouin, Lieutenant General des Armées Navales de France, first Amsterdam edition, engraved portrait, title in red and black with engraved vignette, 5 folding engraved plates by J.P. Le Bas and folding map of the bay of Rio de Janeiro, frontispiece a little water-stained, lightly foxed at beginning and end, contemporary sprinkled calf, rubbed, rebacked, corners repaired, new endpapers, Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1740.⁂ Account of the exploits of the famous French buccaneer during the War of the Spanish Succession; his most notable feat was the capture of Rio de Janeiro.
Fénelon (François de Salignac de la Mothe) Les Aventures de Télémaque, Fils d'Ulysse, 2 vol., one of 350 copies on papier vélin, half-titles, engraved portrait, 3pp. imprimatur at beginning of vol.1 and limitation leaf at end of vol.2, one or two small spots but a lovely clean copy, fine contemporary red morocco with triple gilt fillets, by Derome le jeune, spines gilt in compartments of a small diamond between bands of Greek key pattern, g.e., vol.1 with engraved binder's ticket dated 1785, spines very slightly faded, [Brunet II 1215], 8vo, Paris, Didot l'aîné, 1784.⁂ Superb copy of one of a series of Latin and Greek classics printed for the Dauphin, this one using Didot l'aîné's new type.

Russia.- Bruyn (Cornelis de) Voyages...par la Moscovie, en Perse, et aux Indes Orientales, 2 vol., first edition in French, titles in red and black, vol.1 with half-title and engraved frontispiece by B. Picart, engraved portrait after Kneller, 3 folding engraved maps, 274 engraved plates on 108 folding sheets (numbered 1-260 plus 14 unnumbered), 44 engraved illustrations in text, lacking binder's leaf at end of vol.2, contemporary ink inscription of Charles de Glimes de Brabant to front pastedown, contemporary calf, rebacked preserving original gilt spines, slightly rubbed, folio, Amsterdam, chez les Freres Wetstein, 1718.⁂ A handsome and clean copy of this important account of De Bruyn's voyage to Russia, Persia, India, and Java, which includes large folding panoramas of Moscow and Isfahan and many plates on animals and plants.
Scotland.- Clerk (John) A Series of Etchings Chiefly of Views in Scotland, engraved portrait, 57 etched and lithographed plates (comprising 55 numbered and 2 unnumbered), many with multiple images, some tinted, occasional foxing, mostly restricted to margins, bookplate of the Earl of Ancaster to pastedown, original cloth with paper label to upper cover, rebacked and recornered in modern red morocco, covers a little rubbed and marked, folio, Edinburgh, Lizars for the Bannatyne Club, 1855.⁂ Fine series of landscape etchings by one of Scotland's finest amateur artists - the significantly extended second edition. Clerk practised draughtmanship from an early age but was certainly encouraged to draw topographically by his friend Robert Adam, the eminent architect who became his brother-in-law. Through Adam he was introduced to Paul Sandby, the English painter and printmaker in the late 1740s, and the three men would often take drawing trips together around the region. Clerk began the practice of copper-plate etching around the 1770s and went on to produce over one hundred impressions by 1778.
Coleridge (Samuel Taylor).- [Chatterton (Thomas)] Poems, supposed to have been written at Bristol, by Thomas Rowley...in the Fifteenth Century, large paper copy, additional engraved vignette title, later ink inscription from Roger Ingpen to C.J.Burges dated 1887 on front free endpaper, engraving of 'The Distressed Poet' loosely inserted, later half calf, spine gilt, [Rothschild 590], Cambridge, B.Flower, for the editor, 1794 § Coleridge (S.T.) This edition was the first to contain Coleridge's Monody on the Death of Chatterton, his second appearance in print.Roger Ingpen (1869-1936), literary editor and author of Shelley in England, 1917.

A Dramatic Poem, pirated edition, half-title, soiled and stained, stitched in original wrappers, title and author's name in manuscript on upper wrapper, uncut, soiled and frayed at edges, for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1817 § Lamb (Charles) Rosamund Gray, Essays, Poems, 8pp. catalogue at beginning, half-title, original blind-stamped cloth, 1849 § Evans (Sebastian) Sonnets on the Death of the Duke of Wellington, half-title, disbound, soiled, Cambridge, 1852, 8vo & 12mo (7)⁂ A pencilled note at the beginning of the first mentioned suggests "Miss Watson" was the daughter of Dr. Watson, Bishop of Llandaff, and with whom Lloyd is known to have corresponded. The recipient of the second was Samuel Tertius Galton (1783-1844), businessman and scientist, member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham and father of Francis Galton the scientist.The fourth item is one of several pirated editions of a work written by the young radical Southey in 1794. By the time it was published by Sherwood in 1817 (in some editions printing the author's name) Southey had become a staunch Tory and Poet Laureate, thereby causing him embarrassment at which his enemies delighted.
Execution Broadside.- Trial and Execution of Richard Gillam (The), for the Wilful Murder of Maria Bagnall, at Bath, c.505 x 355mm, 3 woodcuts depicting the hanging, murder and full-length portrait of the murderer, the first with decorative border, folded in half and tipped to sheet of card, lightly soiled at edges and fold, short tear and fraying to fold at edge (but no loss), another small tear to lower margin, Bristol, J.Catnach, Printer...sold by W.Marshall, [1828]; and another similar but defective broadside of the execution of James Lines for the murder of George Teague at Writhlington Coal Pit near Radstock in December 1837, with text including small woodcut of hanging but larger woodcut of murder torn away at head (2)⁂ No other copies traced of either. The first is for the murder of Maria Bagnall or Brignall, companion to an elderly lady in Bath, found murdered in the kitchen of Marlborough Buildings on 26th January 1828. Gillam was the butler and claimed that robbers had entered the house and murdered her. He was 24 and hanged at Ilchester Gaol on 4th June 1828; his wife, the cook, gave birth to their daughter shortly before his execution.
