A 20th century studio pottery circular charger, in the style of Leach, in green brown glaze with central landscape scene, marked to revere B Watford `86, diameter 47 cm, together with a 20th century studio pottery rectangular wall plaque, depicting a female holding a basket above her head, height 63 cm, (2).
MICHAEL CASSON, LARGE STONEWARE JUG, LATE 20TH CENTURY, saltglazed, impressed seal mark, 39cm high, Literature: Cooper, Emmanuel, Obituary, Independant newspaper, 17th December 2003. Note: Michael Casson (1925-2003) was one of the pioneers in the renaissance of studio pottery in the post-war period, a greatly respected and a charismatic teacher and educator who influenced several generations of potters. After reading Bernard Leach`s 1940 `A Potter`s Book`, Casson responded positively to its concept of unity and wholeness, and its advocacy of functional and individual wares. Together with his wife, Sheila, he sought to put Leach`s ideas into practice.
A remarkable Bernard Leach fireplace, there are twelve decorated 4 inch square tiles, of these nine are clearly monogrammed, their subjects include a Japanese Pottery, a Japanese well, a bear before mountains, a snail, a fish and a man carrying a yoke before a bay. These twelve tiles are within a tiled area of 45 x 47 inches, with an aperture of approximately 12 x 18 inches. There is a hearth of plain Leach tiles measuring 47 x 15 inches. (See illustration)
